    Ah cheers Yeah I think you're right. I didn't realise harnesses flexed. Sounds like I will be able to justify not wearing the hans device on the road

    Small point though: wrt your second assumption - neck injuries are not really caused by the distance that your head has to lose speed over, but really the relationship (or difference) in the differences between the distance your body moves versus your head. So having a 'looser' body restraint could reduce neck injuries.

    You are missing the part where there is no controlled deceleration during the point where your body is moving forward with the seatbelt. Once the seatbelt tightens and stops your body your head is still going to keep travelling forwards till it reaches the limit of movement, and then start to decelerate. The difference in energy imparted through your neck is going to be negligible (IMO)

    A bloke at my local race track died in a slow speed crash with a harness and no HANS.
    The officials drill it into you a least 4 times during each briefing the importance of a hans while you'e using a harness on the track
