De-sludging a 1JZ (or any engine really)

Recently bought a 1jz sight unseen, price was ok and it come with a compression test;
Anyway, its a bit sad under the rocker covers, would prefer to clean this shit up while I can etc

Its not terminal but there is quite a bit of loose sludge baked and packed up in places. Just wondering whats the best way to clean most of it up?
At the moment I'm thinking a brush and a cleaning gun full of boiling kerro, just break as much of the shit up as possible and wash it into the sump.

I'm replacing the sump and fitting a 2JZ oil pump so should be able to get the chunky bits out etc

Or should I just leave it as is?

Sounds like it has been run on mineral oil and or negleted a bit. I would clean as best I could and change filters a couple of times early in its start up. Don't forget to give the cooling system a really good clean out too . it's a PTA but you will regret it in the long run if you shortcut it now (speaking from experience) good luck with it.

Yeah, got the motor out, do it all now.
Hence the oil pump, all seals, timing belt and whatever else I need.

Like most Soarers, not normally owned by people who care.

Well depends how soon you will run it but at work we have pulled sump off, removed rover cover, decoked it all, then pushed it out side and pressure washed it, refit and run cheap oil for a bit then change it, comes out a treat.
But as ur motor is not running makes it harder

I considered that, we have a steam cleaner at work but not super keen on washing it and letting it sit.

Yea we only did it to running motors in car, the one issue if you do it and don't remove all the loose Black Death is sometimes worse than just leavin it there and changing the oil more often

Yeah that's the worry, last thing I want to do is miss a bit and have it block the pickup.
Thinking pull the cams and go to town with the boiling hot kero in the spray gun, vacuum cleaner and air blower.

Then just cycle some oil through it, thankfully I've got enough Delo 400 from work to last me a lifetime lol

i honestly can't see it blocking the whole 70mm (estimation from memory) gauze pickup.. if anything it would collect in the shrouded part, so you could always pop a few extra holes in there? (as silly as that sounds)

any sort of KOH or NaOH degreaser literally turns the sludge to liquid and dissolves it pretty much instantly (if mixed strong enough).. much easier than any sort of petrol/kero/diesel etc.. it's the same sort of stuff they use in 'hot tank's'...

the only downside is that it is extremely horrible to aluminium alloys and the like when mixed very strong.. it's probly the quickest and easier way to clean cam covers etc.. ready for paint etc.. then its 'just' a case of making sure you oil everything back up - maybe an engine stand and a full gut of some really thin oil like a 0/10w... roll it over and over a few times.. if you can chuck a bellhousing on it with a starter motor!

it sounds so back yard and barbaric.. but i can't really see it doing any damage as long as everything gets lubricated again.. before it sees lots of movement.. the degreaser won't work it's way into the bearing surface or into the cylinder bores if you have everything taped up etc..

The delo 400 will help it wash itself, being a diesel oil with detergent properties.

just run the diesel oil for a while, my 1uz was pretty ordanary too so just run cheep ass diesel oil for a bit of a arvo lap, changed it and filter, done a week to work and back, changed it and filter then maybe a few weeks then change it. every time i was surprised the shit that was in the filter, i cut it up and some particles was almost like small grains of sand. running half half petrol/diesel oil now for a few thousand for a bit more of a clean, so far so good...... haha

When I brought my silvia it had a descent build up when I got it. I did a couple of frequent oil changes then did oil flushs. When I removed the cams to put bigger ones in (aprox 30k later) it was clean, some minor varnish but none of the carbon build up. I run the cheapest oil money can buy and just change it ever 5k.

Not sure about desludging the whole head but at least if you buy a few cans of seafoam (Liqui-Moly has a decent one) or soobie UEC, go to town with it on the intakes and even pop the plugs and spray it directly into the chambers, then run the engine without plugs to cycle it through before letting it sit 10-15mins, reinstalling plugs and running the rest of the can through the engine. Then at least the valves would be clean.

do that every 5k and change the oil each time as mentioned, it'll get better and better. Blows a heap of stinky shit out of the exhaust when you're running it on the can.

Got it done, sat the engine in a parts washer (5T overhead crane ftw) and spent 45 minutes washing and blowing shit everywhere with a air blower.

Everywhere means out of places you didn't want it but, also means that it is INTO PLACES you don't want it.
