Did you weigh the 2 engines? Any rough idea of the actual weight difference? I have heard that the 1G is lighter than the 2xR, but have never seen any numbers.Originally Posted by chubbylover53

Excuse my ignoance but is analoge with the old style afm with flap in it and tccs new type with no flap.???
Both types have a flapper-type airflow meter. The analog bit refers to the circuitry inside the ECU; later versions are digital.

Do you mean electronically compatible as well as physicallt? When I was looking at doing this years ago, I was told (by old celica club US folk) that it was only particular AFM...5MGE?... that has the afm with a similar signal to the analog 22RE, but higher flow. Other give an inverse signal IIRC, but I am a little hazy on this - it was years ago.Originally Posted by ViPeR_NiPPleX

So i do appreciate all your help.Just takes a bit to get my mind around a totally different concept.
And a lack of understanding of the 4cyl hightech jargon,But i will get there.

there is no real diffrence dale! what i do on a 22r,4ag2j what ever, is pretty much all the same exept for push rods, which do have there advantages and disadvantages over buckets!
its all pretty straight forward.
The way to look at twincams etc is that they are setup the same as a race chev, they just have buckets and much lower spring seat pressures! besides that there the same.
I've always felt that modding a 22R is more like an working an oldschool engine than a modern Jap engine anyway - Tough, single cam, 8 valves, torquey, rough. Seems to respond to the same kind of work, too. Perhaps this is why they are popular in the US.
Hi,
They're popular in the US 'cos they never got the DOHC engines. Most of the 4cylinder Toyota engines they got were 20R and 22R. They got some 18RC engines, but the vast majority were the 20/22R series. So, they make do with what they got. I'm sure they would of loved to get the 18RG but it never happened.
I'm talking mainly about the Celicas they got over there - they had the 20/22R engine.

I realsie that, but that wasn't my point.
But we didn't get the DOHC engines either - so why aren't 22R's popular here?Originally Posted by river
I think the obsession with 22R's in the US has little to do with availability, but that's getting a bit off topic.![]()
