At what point do you need to go for bucket-over shim?

*edit* Too late at night...I clicked 'reply' at the bottom of the first page. Of course, my question was answered first thing on page 2...

    yeah looks like them !!

On the specs sheet does it say the part no of 2201-RT004???

Are you using std valves with a std installed height?

    p.s ment i use 3sg buckets in 4ag's
Hi, just curious, do the 3SG buckets work in the 4AGE 16Vs 'as is'?
The 1SZ-FE one piece 'bucket+protrusiony shim' system look like a good route (Takai's write up is somewhere on that). Ages ago I bought a 5.12mm just to see if it really did fit and damn! It did!
    Cheers, Nick

no they dont fit straight in! as i machine the head for everything else it dosnt cost much to take the bucket bores out to fit the 3sg ones. at $28 dollars or so each and the machining as i do it myself or a mate does it, it is much cheaper for me than TRD kit, and better as there bigger top surface area!

ive also heard of people using 1SZ-FE buckets in 4age engines.
there is a article on a website somewhere i read, but cant find it now. Anybody???
it was very specific and included part numbers and relative thicknesses.
This conversion does not require machining the head as the buckets are the same diameter and have correct running clearances.

yes, they are a bigger top surface area, but that is of little difference to the 1SZ ones, since the cam only uses a certain amoutn of area of the follower anyway... it may reduce the twisting force of the buckets a bit, but at the same price as a 1SZ lifter (roughly) is there any benefit??

IF you were to alter the head to run a cam with larger base circle, then the larger buckets would definitely be better.... from 1SZ to 3S with a normal cam (normal base circle).... is there any real difference in practice?

why are the 3S ones bettr, with larger surface area, if the area is not being used?

yes Rxbenny ! and for us its easy, so cost effective!

oldrolla the main advatage is that with the microshim 1sz ones you have to change them to get the clearances right, but with 3sg ones you just use shims.
it would only be of value to someone that is doing there head up completely!

im so hung over! bloody charity golf days!

Yamaha FJ1200 (shim under) buckets and springs also are a direct fit. I ran 9.1mm lift with the Yamaha springs no problem, plenty left before bind. I only used the our spring (they are an inner outer spring arrangement) and when used out of the box, are designed to control smaller bike valves (obviously lighter) , but up to the mid teen's rpm wise. I can't recall the seat pressures etc now tho...Just another option re springs perhaps...

Yup, bike ones - Last set I got were from a mob in Melbourne and were 'APE' brand for drag bikes http://www.aperaceparts.com/. A fews years back they were $AUD200 a set, but come with inners and outers. chuck the inners away as together way too stiff (uless you want 14000rpm etc)
I have heard Kawasaki also fit, but I have not used those . so hearsay only...

woulde it be possible to rename this thread and the info to the first post to say "4age 16V" ? because all the quoted figures figures I have read so far are for that and not 20V. To avoid confusion and all
