HKS valve spring ( max lift )

Would anyone happen to know at what lift HKS valve springs will bind on a 4age ????


I believe std springs bind at around 8.3mm

I am planning to upgrade cams and want to find out how much lift i can use?

I will be pulling 2 of them back out to prop check installed valve height so that i can work out spring bind for sure but it would be handy to know the specs now.

I have the HKS sheet that came with the springs but its in japanese.
I can read some jap but i dont think the spring bind or maximum lift specs for the springs are on it.

STD springs bind at 8mm

HKS springs bind at 8.5 mm

Anyone know how much clearence from total bind height to max lift should be ??

I.e if the installed height of the spring is 35 mm and the spring will bind all coils at 25.4mm ( make it 26 to be safe)

This will leave a maximum lift of 9.6mm to bind the spring.

What is a safe lift to run and not risk damage ??? 8.5mm

just to answer my own question the stock springs run .54mm clearence from full bind.

Justin case you havn't seen it, here's the Performance Springs website, http://www.performancesprings.com.au/ it lists all spring specs including bind.

4AGE springs are listed as .875", or 22.225mm, seems a big difference between these & the HKS jobbies?

Ahh just found it . It is their bind height !
so you will beable to run a fair amount of lift with those springs!

Yeah, according to their table.
However, they give the option of shimming the springs for more pressure, which you might need with 30+ psi & biggish cams, so that would have to be taken into consideration.
All their specs are in inches, & their seat pressures are at installed height, ie. 50psi @ 1.345"/34.163mm installed height, up to 100psi @ 1.1"/27.94mm, so the 100psi setting will allow 6mm LESS lift before bind. But 100psi seat pressure is crazy anyway! I imagine you'd want somewhere around 70 at the most?

100 psi is pretty crazzy indeed! recon you would have some wear issues for sure and prob start strippin cam cap threads

The HKS ones are are 60 psi seat pressure.

Im a little spewin i would have liked to run abit more lift than 8.5mm but ill have to make it up in duration im planning 272 deg.

100psi is mental! You'd want a pretty good starter motor to get the whole lot spinning!

To get 60psi seat pressure out of the Performance Springs springs, I'm guessing you'd need around a .080"/2mm shim (just a vague guess, but I doubt the shim vs. preassure increase is going to be linear- I bet Stewie could come up with a formula to work it out exactly ) which would bring the bind height a bit closer to the HKS ones.

How much does a set of HKS springs go for?

i priced those springs today can get em for $112 inc may get some so i can run more lift !

If any one wants GENUINE HKS valve springs less than 20 hrs old let me no !!!!!


Question:

I know valve spring installed height is the height of the valve spring from the underside of the retainer to the spring seat BUT on a twincam engine when you cant get to the underside of the spring retainer cause of the bucket guide.

So do they measure installed height including the retainer ????

The reason i ask this is because all of the measurements i have taken match up with the STD specs but are including the retainer thickness ( about 2mm )



I.E club 4ag quote a installed height of 34.7 . I get this measurement when i include the thickness of the retainer.

just wondering what "binding' means... i assume its not good. i had contacted waggot cams about getting some billet cams for my NA smallport 4age:

A 262 deg with 8.2 mm lift is available. You can use std springs with this grind.

does this mean the waggot guy is incorrect?

Bind is when the spring is compressed to the point where the coils begin to contact each other, so no, it's not very good at all!
8.2mm might be possible, you'd expect Waggot to know what they're on about, but for $112 why not upgrade the valve springs? Better safe than sorry. While it's apart you may as well chuck in some new valve stem seals too.....

i think the new valve springs are definately a good idea. sorry if this is hijacking a little, i'm obviously a bit of a noob.

so with these figures, does it mean that the highest theoretical possible lift you could go with these performance springs is 12.475mm? just checking if i am reading the figures right.

also, if i am needing springs for that particualr profile, i might actually go a higher lift (was trying to go the highest on std springs), would i need the performace retainers as well?
