Horses for courses;
One is designed for a modern passenger car to offer performance on par with modern petrol engines, the other was designed to fit into a 70 series and tow hoarse floats and drive around mine sites.
I remember looking at the VM Motori diesels as a mate had just bought a 428-powered Wrangler.
VM R 428 - best figures of 130kw/460Nm
1VD-FTV - best figures of 195kw/650Nm (twin turbo), or 151kw/430Nm for the single-turbo
...
...
...
How exactly that that count as the VM engine exceeding the Toyota? Even the VM A 428 (which is the followup to the R 428) only makes 147kw/460Nm. Sure it's comparing a 2.8L 4-cyl to a 4.5L V8, and on specific figures the VM might win (and has the edge slightly on torque vs the single-turbo model), but the twin-turbo from the 200-series wipes the floor with it on outright numbers.
AE102 - Charlene the Old Faithful, Reborn

was just comparing on paper the latest offering of the which you are correct in saying is the A 428 (holden colorado, craptiva etc) which is 147kw/500nm..
it has been proven that various DP chips on the older models (like KJ jeep cherokee) can meet and exceed the 1VD single turbo buy a significant amount..
don't get me wrong there is a plethora of 6 cylinder merc engines like the OM642 (jeep grand cherokee) that turns out 195kw, and 620nm (depending on platform it's in).. and it's just a 3L v6.. i was just a little dissapointed when i saw all the hype on the 1VD... even in twin turbo 200 series geise.. (although they do perform quite well pushing the cruiser around!!)
on that, merc offer the OM651 - 2,143cc 4 cyl 500nm/153kw....
Dnegative is right to an extent - the japanese diesel technonolgy whislt has been around for ever and a day, is proven, and reliable.. this 'new' common rail and peizo injector business is only been adopted alot later in japan than europe, whilst the farmers are in thier hilux's and tritons 'used' to the ok fuel economy ,terrible power and goor torque/off roading.. the euro's are enjoying petrol like power delivery with rediculous torque numbers and phenominal economy in comparison... there is rediculous amounts of refinment and R&D going on in europe and has been for decades perfecting diesels.. and whilst i am a huge toyota fan... quite franky nothing that is made in japan (at least without euro intervention like Nissan/renault) just cannot compete with the smaller displacement euro type diesels.. they are getting much better though..
still couldn't beleive that a less than 10 year old Prado with it's huge (in comparison to euro stuff) 3L (1KZ NOT later model 1KD) was struggling to put out 97kw........ the jap stuff is only now and very recently comparable with euro stuff that has been around for 10-15years.

the way i see it is yeah sure they are lacking in power and economy compared to the euros but toyota are not idiots, they still sell a shit tone of diesels as they are, so why spend millions upgrading for bugger all gain? upgrade when you have to, when they start loosing sales or emission laws. toyota has built such a good name that despite being lacking in some fields people still buy them, and pay top dollar too, i know if i was in the market for a new car i would fall for this also...... haha
Put it this way, if Toyota started selling 'cruisers with the 1HD-FTE they would probably sell them at the same rate they are selling them today.
the 200 cruisers are crap
heaps of problems with them
but I think the engine aint to bad
1hdfte is best diesel motor out there in a factory car
I would not touch anything that has the words Chrysler or wrangler or jeep in the name hehehe
