Default No spark - 22re Corona

    Hi guys,

I have a RT142 Corona with a 2.4L 22re in it and I'm having a problem with it starting (no spark).
The motor is completely stock and most of the components throughout the engine bay are the same ones that came from the factory.

I cleaned my engine bay with a pressure washer and drove it around for a day or so without any trouble and nothing out of the ordinary. Half way through the next day when i was driving along at 50kmh the motor just cut out. I hadn't driven like an idiot for a few weeks and the car had been running beautifully.
Since it stopped it has had no spark. While the car was on the side of the road i checked all the obvious problems, checked for any water in the spark leads and still couldn't find anything wrong. so far I have changed the distributor cap and rotor button, the ignition coil and the spark plugs and leads were changed only a few weeks before this happened. I have checked that the coil is getting power to it properly and it all seems fine. Now the only thing i havn't yet changed is the electronic pack on top of the coil (Ignitor pack?) Is there anything else to check? Should I try and find an ignitor pack somewhere?
If i can find what is wrong by the end of this week I thing I will be taking it to an auto electrical shop.

    Can anyone please help!!

    Cheers,

    Brad.

check the resistance of the sensor in the dizzy, the 2 little wires coming out, no idea what it should be sorry but if thats not working the system wont know the engine is turning over and wont make spark. if that appears ok i would be going ignitor

    edit:
found the resistance values on a pdf, its for a non vacuum advanced dizzy, 185-275 ohms cold and 240-325 ohms hot

Okay cheers, hopefully I will get some time to check that tomorrow arvo.
If its all good and i need to replace the ignitor where would be the best place to get one? Do places like repco stock them or would I have to get a second hand one off like ebay or something?

    Cheers,

    Brad.

Look on www.partsbase.org/toyota for your model, need to know what actual model and year engine is from, then out of memory should be in electrical sensors section. Just looked up part no for you. Two models available 5/1985- 12/1986 89620-14390 Mark=52 or 89620-14400 Mark=64 . Not sure without seeing igniter what Mark= means. If you google part numbers should come up in search on internet. Oh yes be careful of some new reproduction ones on ebay, I had one fail in just over twelve months on my conversion in my TA22.
Forgot to add www.amayama.com had some oem ones in stock about four months ago but were I think about $260 US

brad, where abouts in nsw are you? If its sydney based i could bring all the ignition related gear off my bhg 22re celica to test amd see what the issue is.

Otherwise start at the dead basics, make sure the dizzy turns when you turn the motor over, as you've changed the cap and button you can rule out those two. Unless the new coil has carked it then that leaves the ignitor. I'll see if i can find my workshop manual for correct values to test. Your will be a 22re-c with vacuum advance to the values listed before may not be accurate.

Cheers ToyTA I think mine would be the mark 52 one as the ignitor pack has 2 stickers on the top and one has 52 on it in big numbers. Would this be right?

HMI I,m in the inner west of Sydney. Where abouts are you? wouldn't want to ask you to come too far.
As for checking the basics so far I have done the following:

Checked plugs and all for water and sprayed with WD40 to be sure
The plugs and leads are only a few weeks old
Changed distributor cap and rotor button
    changed coil
turned the motor over with the cap off and the rotor spins
checked power to coil and all seams fine

Is there anything else that I have missed? I'm pretty sure the only thing I havn't done is changed the ignitor pack and I'm not sure how to test if its working properly or not.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Cheers,
    Brad.

Does it have a ballast resistor bolted to the coil as well as the ignitor?
    Cheers Brett.

    Hi Brett,

There's no ballast resistor, it just has the ignitor which I think does all that within it. Would that be right?

I'm still learning about all this stuff, thanks heaps for helping out.

    Cheers,
    Brad.

That would be the correct Mark number i.e 52 then.
If you google the part number you will get a list of places who possibly have them in stock. As well as amayama, since they are a forum sponsor. They are good people to deal with.

I just had a quick look and found the cheapest new one was around the $450 mark. what do you guys think of getting a second hand one from someone on here or off Ebay? I guess it wouldn't last as long as a new one.
