I did two brand new alternators on a machine at work within two weeks, when I went out to replace it the second time their other machine had the battery light come on as it shit one too.
I was perplexed to say the least but its been 7 months since without issue

Dumbass, why do you think haven't tried solving this prior - car has been looked at by a number of auto electricians to sort this - plus I have thrown a couple of new alternators at it. Why they don't like touching the car is that it has a custom loom made of all aircraft wiring and it takes time to understand it; when they can make far more money in this area of the world from mining vehicles which are simple and high return. Its also not about money, I suspect I am spending more on 5MGE engine development and MA61 racing than anyone in the world. Its actually about understanding what the issue is and therefore stopping it from happening again, and not turning up at race meetings with a car you are then working on for 3 days - after all, historic Group C and A racing is really about entertainment with old cars, not about winning. Especially in an early Group A car which is up against later M3s in the same class.

    Thanks for everyone's help.

    John

Well I doubt its electrical problem causing this
I've seen on some 1js where the exhaust in cyl 1 is close to the alternator
Can cause premature alternator failure due to heat and I've seen one car go thru two alternators in quick time

I don't know how the electricals would cause them to fail
Maybe try looking at this from a different perspective and see if u get anywhere
If u disconnect battery all the time car is not being used then just hook up
The ign and the supply wire right to battery positive
On toyota alternators u don't need the charge light because u have the ign to the alt
Just run a volt gauge to tell u alt is charging
Just to see if that stops them blowing up

I've done couple thousand engine wire ups and never seen wiring cause so many failures
When the alt is wired right

Hey John, sounds like a couple of hours trawling through ebay international for another replacement bosch alternator might be easier than mucking around with the wiring that otherwise works fine. then you'd have the bonus of an external reg, which would be easier to change during a race
what was the old one off?

I also doubt it is a wiring issue... but my alternator wiring notes for what it is worth!

if it's all too confusing.. why not just rewire the alternator from scratch... screw the loom
