Default How does petrol vent in a TA22?

When I bought my TA22 there weren't many parts included so I had to make much of it up as I went along. One of these 'things' was the petrol lines. The problem I have is I open the drivers door after parking for a length of time, and nearly pass out from the petrol fumes inside the cabin.

So I ask how was the petrol tank meant to be vented in a '72 TA22 so that the driver didn't pass out in the driver's seat?

Geez this is stretching the memory somewhat. Big ugly black cylindrical thing on the passengers side of the engine bay is the charcoal canister. One line down that side of the car goes to a fitting in the top of the tank via an elongated S pipe on top. When running the vapours at the top of the tank are drawn through the charcoal canister and into the intake by a vacuum line. In a static situation any pressure in the tank should be vented through the petrol caps internal valve. I would look at how well all of the hoses are connected to your tank, do not rely on the old Toyota wire clips but use some proper hose clamps. If you need to replace hose bite the bullet and for an extra few dollars a metre get EFI hose. A bit less porous and probably fit the pipes better than the older hose you have in there. Have a good look at the filler neck rubber. If you have EFI relocate the surge tank to under the floor of the car. A few metres of fuel hose in the boot will always weep.

    cheers Chuck.

On the top of the TA22 tank is a fitting which is the vent line. From memory this is a hard line thats 1/4 inch. It originally goes under the car to the charcoal canister. If you have EFI like me then I just have the line ending under the car where the fuel fumes can vent.

Another thing is that some fuel hoses will "allow" fuel fumes through the hose itself, unless you have EFI I doubt that is the issue. Check the line from the top of the tank and make sure its connected and the hose at least goes out under the car. The hard line should go from the top of the tank and then between the tank and back seat and out to the bottom of the car around where the diff centre is. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the awesome information, Yes the car is EFI, although I don't run a surge tank or a charcoal canister, just the bosch pump under the car. I might look at replacing the hoses as that seems to be the problem. i have run a UV dye through the petrol and can't see any leaks so it must be crappy hoses. Out of interest, what would you replace the large filler neck hose with?

Pretty sure neoprene is the go. If it was me I'd find a used hose or even see if they are still available through Toyota. It doesn't take pressure so fumes are no issue with just the stock hose.

You could also buy a filler neck hose from eBay from another car and cut to fit, the ta22 one just has a slight bend in it so it would be hard to find something that would fit from another car.
