Default 22R engine convert to fuel injected?

    Hey guys,

just wondering if it is worth the hassle of hunting down an EFI plenum and wiring and ecu etc to convert to EFI.

I was wanting to turbo my 22R and it has been suggested that I should first look at an EFI set up.

What sort of cost would I be looking at?

    Thanks in advance

    Vis

edit: I am in SEQLD so if anyone has any suggestion or bits available for this type of work...

if you had a donor car it would be pretty easy, there is a few coronas/celicas floating around wreckers these days, you would have all the parts needed. you may have to make some of the wiring harness up yourself (if getting parts of corona anyway) due to the air flow meter wiring is mixed in with the main harness (runs down rhs wheel arch through dash, rest of engine stuff goes behind the head to the lhs of the firewall). or buy intake manifold, fuel rail, injectors, and use a after market management might be easyer if you plan on turbo

Not trying to advertise stuff but i do have a 22re in my spare ra65 with a blown headgasket. PM me for details.

I looked at the turbo option on the 22re and in my opinion it wasn't worth it, i'm assuming its going into a hilux and if so a 2 or 3rz swap would cost less than a turbo setup, sure you wouldn't male the same power but it would be a far more reliable setup. From everything i've seen trying to get power out of a 22re is like pushing water uphill.

People can feel free to disagree or change my mind.

Hey thanks for the replies guys.

I am not actually looking at getting a great deal of power, I am more looking for a little bit of power, but with greater fuel economy. Hence the discussions on Fuel Injection. I already have the turbo, piping, intercooler and mainfold for a turbo set up (piping and intercooler new, but turbo and manifold picked up for a steal at the toowoomba swap meet). It is going into an '89 4Runner SR5.

I'll send you a PM re: the 22re

hmm can you document the work involved in a build thread please ?

Having a 1989 SR5 Hilux dual cab means this is of interest to me.

If it ever gets off the ground, sure no worries

At the moment I am just weighing up costs and pros/cons. It is either keep it carby fed and turbo that, or switch to fuel injection and turbo.

Fair enough I've got carbie issues with mine at the moment and was considering just ditching the carb setup for the EFI.

I've had a 22RE Corona previously and i never had any problems with the EFI gear.

yeah I just replaced my OEM carby a couple of weeks ago with one I already had sitting around. the auto-choke was sticking and it was running too rich when cold. But seeing as I have a new motor and its only done 3000k's I figure I should investigate all options rather than one.

You might want the inlet manifold, however you would want to get a tuneable computer to get the best from it, or just look for 22rte bits and use a lightly upgraded factory system.

i cant recall but i did come across a mob from the states that had a set up that you could use the factory computer but convert the flap door air flow meter to a hot wire one and some other stuff to suit the turbo and be half tune able, cant for the life of me remember the website but. also have you considered dedicated gas with the turbo? seen one a while ago could be pretty cool

i think that was the sds kit, but for the price megasquirt is cheaper and more tunable.

Thanks for the input guys, I am looking at getting the EFI setup and with any luck, bolting most of it on.

Megasquirt does seen the way to go, I do have a turbo and piping and intercooler all ready to go as well.

I know this is an old thread but how did you go with the swap ?
I have done the same swap in my hilux , cost me $1200 for a sparky to wire it up including a Bosch 040 fuel pump , fuel economy wasn't worth the conversion but it is smoother
