    Default t40/t50 backend swap

doing a 4agze swap into my ta28 celica, using a t50 box, has anyone fitted a t40 backend to a t50 box as my gearlever is now too far back, the gearlever extension housing should fit on to a t50, but do linkages have to be swapped over too, had a look in faq's but nothing , any help welcome

I can't guarantee the T40 rear housing will fit, never worked with T40's only t50's, I think the T50 has differnt rear housing for 5th gear. As far as changing goes you need to open main case and swap selector rails, In very near future about to start building an AE86 close ratio box for my TA22 which needs same conversion as you for shifter position.

Yes TA22 boxes have the forward shifter position. Apparently you can swap these over easily but you need to also swap the selector shaft with the housing to make it work.

How much further back does it sit?

Could you make a remote shifter setup that mounts to the box and move the shift lever forward to the original spot?

if you have 2 full gearboxes, it can be done.

but had to open boxes, and depends at bearing sizes do you need to swap all gear "changing pars" or just swap 5 speed axles to the older casing.

remeber that there is also newer type splines in some late type T50 boxes, usually they are from AE86.

    yeap

you had to totally open the gearboxes, swap all youre old type T40 gear levers to the AE86 cases, and use T40 tail housing... nothing more.
swap also youre speedo gears from T40 to youre new box.

you have correct type of driveshaft ? big spline one ?

usually people want to use old stock driveshaft than ae86 one bcz there is bigger joints and fits perfectly bcz its car original.

i have mix these transmissions quite many, but not in the last years.

you also had to use bellhousing from AE86. not old type AE70 or like that, thats made for small bearings. at least some of them.

Celica propshaft + AE86 bellhousing needs old type T50 with 20 spline with small bearings and adapter rings for bellhousing to support bearings.

20 splined got different kind of bearings at front of the gearbox, so there is needed to machine some steel O rings to support those bearings. otherwise transmission damaged quite fast. and some grinding to bellhousing was MAYBE needed (side axle bearing place at bell)

there is atleast 3 type of T50

EARLY with small bearings / 20 spline / old type shifter (front) found from: TA22, TA12....
MID with small bearings / 20 spline / new type shifter (rear) found from TA40, early TA60, TE71 ....
LATE with BIG bearings / 22 spline / new type shifter (rear) AE86, late TA60.

use this information with youre own risk its from my memory...

Then you had to use ae86 propshaft.
