Yes, if it is ground/machined flat & smooth & hardened, not those available at your local hardware, but available used from almost any other engine. VW air cooleds were plentiful & cheap years ago.

Finally putting the motor back together, regarding the cam caps.
How tight do you guys do it, it says 9ft lbs but i dont have a wrench that reads that low.
Is it simply a case of just reasonable hand tightening.
I've done them reasonably hand tight before on a 4AGZE with no issues. For my silvertop I borrowed the small torque wrench from work, just to make sure.
