    Default Hub-to-CV nuts and washers....

    Howdy,
    This may seem like a silly thing.....I am wondering do most vehicles with CV's at the hub (say ST185, AE92, AW11) use a washer behind the hub nut? Or is a washer just used on models where the nut doesn't have one face that is a flange? What is the purpose of the washer if the nut has a flange surface on one side?

    I have two new nuts for my new CV's with 22mm hub shaft thread - the old CV's had 19mm threads and obviously the old 19mm washers don't fit. I am wondering if it is safe to not use washers?

    All the ones i've pulled apart (plenty) with regular nuts have the big flat washer
    And all the flanged nuts don't.

    Seems toyota changed to cut costs and speed up production time, like the toyota way.
    started off with
    Washer, nut, star shaped retainer, split pin
    Flanged nut, star shaped retainer, split pin
    Flanged nut castled, split pin
    And on the latest stuff it's a flanged nut and the driveshaft has a chunk missing that you beat the edge of the nut into.

    I'm sure a CV place would throw some at you, or visit your local friendly toyota wrecker and ask if you can scrounge through the tubs of nuts and bolts. The washer/flange spreads the load over a greater area.

    I have two brand new flange nuts and star shaped retainers, so looks like I'm set then. Just gotta grab another split pin and check out the torque spec for the hub nut! +rep for the interesting info.

    A flat washer at minimum is installed on a fasteners rotating piece, ie: with a nut and bolt a flat waher should be under the nut at least, plus probably a spring washer as well as a flat waser under the bolt head. If you are looking at a bolt only then there should be at least a flat washer under the head, plus a spring washer if required.

    The general idea is to stop the fastener digging into the (often softer) material of the parts being joined. It also spreads the loading further across the part.

    I'm not ure what you mean by a nit that a a flange on one face.

    No. Please buy washers. Don't be a half job. But will the larger shafts still fit existing apertures?

    Yes the larger CV shaft thread diameter was a 'Toyota upgrade' for 1989 onwards AW11s, it DOES fit through the hub, otherwise I wouldn't be using it!! The flange nut IS the key in this whole thread. It is designed so it does not need a washer, like I said it has a FLANGE on one side, so it wont chew up the surface it tightens to. Read C2888's post.... I will also put a little thread lock on the nut. BUT also there is a start shaped thing so a split pin can stop the nut undoing (but not loosening).

    Does the later model have a washer listed as a part? Guess not if the nut is flanged and as you said therefore doesn't need a washer answering your own question.

    Check the tension range of the nut, tighten to the lowest and check the hole for the split pin. Then progessively increase the tension as required to align the holes. Best practice is if you over tighten past the hole is to disassemble and retension.

    Just to throw a spanner in the works, my 89 AW11 (with the 22mm shafts), had a flanged nut on one side, with no washer, and on the drivers side, a standard nut with a washer. Ahah! Work that out...but I doubt it's OEM spec, I'm sure it's been apart before. The other function of a washer is to make torque settings more reliable, because the harder, smooth surface of a washer makes for much more consistent friction when you tighten it...
