if you want more, up the wattage.

HID kits are overrated. a full HID assembly seems to be better, but the lights ARE brighter than normal lights (which is why you need leveller etc) or so it seems..
I'll second that. And one other thing I found out, If your also looking at getting HID's for a bit of bling i.e: headlights changing colours at different angles, it'll only happen as the bulb warms up to operating temperature. The bulbs will go thru the colour spectrum until it's at it's rated kelvin. yellow -> white -> blue -> purple. The fact that AUDI's etc change colours so frequently is due to the 'reflector' type lenses. It has little to do with the HID itself. So if you want crazy looking headlights, you really gotta spend the dollars and get a proper kit developed with HID bulbs and reflector lenses. Google 'reflector headlights' and some place in the states sell them. 5.5" - 7" round etc. Probably not 86 tho.

HID is an expensive way to go and as previously said you need new reflectors as well to do it right.

I have read the 100W bulb only put out 15% more light than a 60W bulb and the rest goes in heat. The newer H4 bulbs that claim to be brighter for the same wattage seem to make more sense and not risk cooking your lamps when moving slowly.

Either way it is worth setting up relays for high and low beam to reduce voltage drop and effectively allow your lights to run at their optimum. If installing the high wattage bulbs the relays are a very good idea otherwise you will end up burning the contacts in the column dip switch. Also ceramic headlight connectors with heavy leads can be purchased from Coventrys.

Setting up the relays on the Toyota is not so simple if you want the hi-beam indicator on the dash to keep working so I will refer you to my comments in another thread to save repeating it.

thanks for all the neg comments guys!

seriously through, my mate just did this to his car and the results are really really good, so im going to do it too.

as for being legal, the car will only ever see mountain passes at 2am anyway, and it's not like anything else on the car is legal.

in that case, why not just set it up with "proper" lights....

ie, a mix of pencil and spread beams, similar to what is used on WRC cars. since you are not worried about it being legal, and you REALLY need to see where you are going if you are driving dangerously on mountain roads in the dark

and whats the point of building a car that you can't drive on the road except at 2am?

Seriously just go out and fibre up a nice lightpod for the bonnet, and then add a pair of 1000W SuperOscars and a pair of similar pencil lights, and then itll look something like this:

takai i dont wanna be some form of death star driving down the road! i just want to be able to see where im driving. oldcorollas please explain more about making a 'proper light set', do you mean like putting sealed lights into the old headlight casing?

i built the car for the race track, but it's no fun if you cant drive it at all.

no no.. i meant like Takai

if you aren't worried about legality.. do it properly and see where you are going

as for converting to HID... because the position AND direction of the emitted light is different between HID and normal globes, you need to have HID reflectors instead of normal, and you need the correct front lense also.... just nice them off some new car and adapt

yes mine look amazing but they have too much glare. Its quite a dilema for me because I love the colour and brightness so much but I have to face them almost directly at the road just so people dont high beam me. I want to look into modifying a reflecter setup out of another car to suit a sprinter, dunno if it can be done though.
