That will do it every time.. Cracked ring land was the problem. the motor originally did have a blown headgasket on cylinder 3 though. i fixed the the first time with a new gasket.

now where can i find 8.2:1 4EFTE pistons??! called toyota and gave them the part numbers (off toyodiy) and he said nothing comes up.

Set of forgies are $400 on ebay.......
They look decently hi-comp for a turbo motor too. Sure that's not a non-turbo bottom end?

StuC can you link me to those pistons dude? ive looked and looked and 600 was the cheapest i could find some ross pistons.

hrmm not 100% sure mate. The block does have the knock sensor, differently shaped sump though.. but it also had a 200mm flywheel (4efe size) rather than a 212mm flywheel. Def has a GT gearbox on it.

Dan_k - thanks but id like to buy from aus if possible. want to get it running next week if possible

balls indeed just looked up some pics of the conrods too and i definitely have pissy FE conrods Im thinking this is also a 4EFE head (softer valve springs, tamer spec'd cams) with a 4EFTE valve cover. Sell me your engine Stu!

    SOLVED.
    Great.
Now I guess it's either upgrade to the low compression high boost industry standard or fix what you've got high compression bastard?

How long did/has it run in the current configuration & how'd you like it?

Allen, it ran for about 5 weeks as is. I was reasonably happy with it but it didn't have much pull over 6k rpm. with the help of StuC I've worked out this is actually a 4efe with all the external bits bolted on so its probably been running shit because its. 9.6:1 comp motor instead of an 8.2 which I thought it wa. It also has pissy conrods, weaker valve springs and milder cams than the turbo motor.. Think I'm going to track down some 8.2 piston and rods and the heavier valve springs . Hopefully then it will rev better in the higher rpm?

Would love an ep82 (they look better than my ep91) but I need to get this thing running again. It's not worth anything while its in pieces. I may sell it when it fixed then see what I'll do.

Think I've been pretty lucky. I've been able to track down the following parts to completely convert my motor to ep82 gt specs. All parts should arrives early next week.

I have: ep82 gt rods, gt camshafts, gt valve springs and gt 8.2:1 pistons on the way. Also ordering big end bearings, new rings, new gasket, bolts and a new front tyre...I wore one of them out really bad for some strange reason LSD might be on the cards later

thought i'd update this thread. thanks to everyone for their help/advice.

So i got this lil beast going again
basically i took the head and sump off, i put the GT spec low comp pistons and gt rods in along with new rings and big end bearings. I also changed to the heavier gt valve springs. put it all together and primed the motor, started first pop and has been running sweet now for a couple weeks.

I comp tested the motor (now with the 8.2:1 pistons) and got a reading of 150/151/152/150psi

Not bad for a job done in my carport

Clocked up 700kms now. going to change the oil & filter next week and start stretching its legs a bit more. wish me luck!
