Default 1GGTE into RA40 QLD Legal Requirements???

    Hi Guys,

I am going to put a 1GGTE with W58 into my Celica RA40, simply for daily driver and won't do anything else. I am new at this and want some info regarding after doing the conversion what do I need to do to get QLD compliance and finally have it registered???

What other upgrades do I need to do to get the car ready to pass compliance??

    - I know I have to upgrade the Fuel system to EFI.

    - If I don't intend to use it for track or drift work, Do I still need to upgrade the brakes and diff? Or will standard diff and brakes be sufficient for compliance

    - What other aspects of the car do I need to upgrade if any.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Looks like Qld TMR have changed the rules for engine mods

    Start reading.

Light vehicle modifications (Department of Transport and Main Roads)

Looks like no-one can "certify" you'll need to apply to the Dept for approval.

Thanks for the info I am having a look at the links you provided.. just curious do you have to a qualified mechanic to do the modification that is in the form there is the "Vehicle modifier details" part that needs to be completed or anybody can do the modification as long as its done correctly to the approved standards and once you apply and approval is given you are good to go??

    thanks again...

I'd be talking off the top of my head but I think anyone could do it. The problem is proving that the work is of a suitable standard. If you get someone qualified to do the work (or sign off on it) then you have gone a long way to demonstrating the quality of the work.

You really need to have a chat with the TMR as the last set of changes are very recent and you can bet they have not yet thought everything through, let alone published helpful guidance.

I really doubt they would approve a mod without seeing the final product. After all, there are good ways and shithouse ways of doing these things.

You really need to contact them and tell them what changes you propose. They might give you an idea if it is something they would approve. But that wouldn't amount to approval. That would only come after suitable inspections/testing.

    Hi,

I have been reading the documents from the TMR website and starting to get a better idea of the process and requirements I will call them on Monday to make a few queries regarding my project and see how things go.

Your feedback so far has been greatly appreciated.

    Thanks..

    Hi Guys,

Thought I should share this info with you all, as per my original post I finally made a formal enquiry with Transport and Main Road - QLD regarding proposed engine conversion based on the new changes that came into effect in May 2013 and was given this response.

"Thank you for your email enquiry to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) about an engine conversion.

Replacement engines that are offered by the manufacturer as an optional engine for that model of vehicle may be fitted. For such conversions, all components, including suspension and brakes, must be identical to those of a vehicle originally produced with the optional engine. If the engine is not an optional engine you would need an Engine Substitution ( LA2 modification). This modification requires an Approved Person, under the Approved Person Scheme to inspect and finally certify the particular modification(s). There is a network of Approved Persons in private industry who are authorised to approve modifications to motor vehicles on behalf of TMR. The Approved Person is required to issue a certificate of modification and affix a modification plate if satisfied that the modification meets the required standards.

To obtain a list of phone numbers of Approved Persons who will be able to perform these modifications under the Approved Person Scheme, please contact the Vehicle Standards and Modification Advice Team.

For this type of modification, Form F1854 is not required.

I trust this answers your enquiry. Should you have further enquiries, please contact the Vehicle Standards & Modifications Advice Team on:- 3114 5844, Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. They will be pleased to assist you"
