I used to run some shitty oil in my old 2t, but now ive upgraded to a 3tc turbo and was wondering whats a good oil choice for it, id assume youd want a thicker oil as it will run hotter due to the turbo, would fully synthetic work well?, ive got my eye on royal purple fully synthetic oil, but im not sure what weight to go, any suggestions would be great!
Cheers,
Callum
Personally I'll be using something like a 20W50 mineral oil with half a 473ml bottle of Lucas break in formula to bring the ZDDP level up to around 2000ppm. The ZDDP is missing from modern synthetic oils and most mineral passenger car oils these days and our solid lifter cam engines MUST have it to avoid premature wear or failure.
ZDDP is not suitable for addition to synthetic oils as far as I have seen...
Modern engines are specifically designed to run on watery synthetic oil whereas our older engines are not. It is well worth the few HP net loss for running a nice thick mineral oil in terms of engine life for our old girls!
Cheers,
Jason
