I use Hylomar which is a head gasket sealant.Made by ACL can be got from Supercheap.I have used this for years.Comes in a pressure pack just spray it on each side let it dry then torque head gasket.
    Cheers Brett.

crowncustom. The bloke who checked the head recommended the same stuff. Thanks.

Got some, sprayed it on, waited, then attempted to put the head on. Ashamed to say it took me 10 minutes of jiggling before I realised the head I was given is different to the one I took off. The one I took off has 2 dowels and the one I was given has one i.e. the dowel at the back end of the block has no hole in the head to fit in. Very disappointing. Ruined the head gasket in the process. I'll just clean the one up I took off and see if it's ok. The area of the head where the head gasket cooked seems ok.

Anyone be able to tell me why the heads are different ?

Yes but can't upload them at the moment. Only got a camera phone and can't find the cord I need to go from the phone to the pc so when I do I'll post them. There's just no dowel hole at the back of the head I was given and the valve chambers are smaller as well. Apart from that it's the same head. Not happy.

Down the track I'll consider a complete 7m or at least something a little more powerful that what I have. Right now though I'll just get the head I took off checked out and put it back on. What's disappointing is I spent $330 giving a makeover to the head I was given i.e. the wrong (expletive deleted) head. Could have spent that on a sc14. Booooooo

From the same bloke I bought the car off. To cut a long story short it was thought the head gasket might have been on the way out when I bought the car. Didn't bother me. Car's in reasonably good nick rust wise was cheap so I bought it. Drove the car for 1500k or so before the head gasket finally said enough. Got another head off the bloke for nothin', had it checked out and had it ready to throw on when I took the other one off. Only then did I find it's not the right one. Not sure what it's off. The bloke I got the head off is coming around this arvo to check it out. Hopefully he's got $330 in his pocket

Should add that he has a 5m-ge in his shed sitting there doing nothing.

Should add it would look good in my car.

Its very possible that it is a late 4M head. They run different sized valves than the 5ME but I have used a late 4M head on a 5ME.

Patrick. That won't be happening this time. It's my daily so need it on the road asap, but, I'd still like to sc14 it so a updated motor may well happen not long after I do that

Brett: I saw a 4m head today. It had 2 holes for the 2 head aligning dowels on the block to fit in. The head I was given only has 1 hole. I'm thinking it's off an earlier version of the m engine. It's annoying it don't fit. Won't be long before I'll have forgotten where things go after putting the head back on.

While I'm here, does anyone know how to remove the air rail ? I undid all the connections but it didn't budge. The air pump's going so the rail can go too.

    Cheers men.

Seems the head I was given had the rear dowel hole welded up at some stage. I know not why. It's actually been welded quite a bit that head. Also, the reason I thought the valve chamber was smaller was because it's been decked as far as it will go making the chamber appear smaller. Thought about putting it on as it might raise the compression to about 8 bazillion, but, too many wee cracks in the old welds.

might make for a bit more fun if the compression is up..

id pull the manifold and replace with extractors... only way you wil get rid of the air pump lines

True, but, I'm not keen on putting it on. It just doesn't look like it'll last very long.

The bloke I got the head off has a set of extractors hanging off his wall. Might see what he wants for them.
