well i can confirm that a clutch fork from a 4 speed coloum shift gearbox from a rn41 fits a 1g gearbox... lol
for all those people who have done it, i have afew questions...
car - 81 RN41 Hilux 2wd trayback (18r)
engine - gen3 1GGTE ( still using std twin turbos )
1, engine brackets - 2x left hand 3y engine brackets.. yeah they will work but as far as i see they need to be in the front mounting position on the block. also the holes aren't even close to matching up.. did you guys just re drill the holes by filling them and redrilling or by slotting them.
2. when using those brackets i have noticed that the turbo return line (steel pipes coming from both turbos) seem to entry back into the block in the middle of where the bracket bolts upto the engine which doesn't let it bolt up unless you modify it a fair bit.
3. oil filter location (inlet side), similar to no 2 but not as bad.. when the oil filter part is screwed into the block it doesn't allow the bracket bolt up by about 3mm.
i'm just wondering what some people have done and how they got around these issues. also tell me what other issues you guys ran into as well during their conversion...
thanks guys

Hey mate I have done it inot an 84 Lux which is the model after yours.
I have a gen3 1ggte and i used the rear 4 eng block mounting holes. It was way off for me when i tried the front 4 and the bracket was hitting the turbo oil drain pipe.
I redrilled the holes in the hilux 3y engine bracket to fit the 1g.
Im not sure if i have done it the best way either because my gearbox has been pulled forward a bit and the engine mounts are stretched a bit too. But there was no way in hell it was going to fit in the other mounting holes. I had to slot the holes in the gearbox mounts too
I used a hilux diesel radiator and had to cut down its mounts because it was hitting the motor originally. But for the minimal time ive had it on the road so far it has stayed cool. I used 2 10inch thermos on the grill side (they also has to be cut up a bit to fit).
Also if you are thinking about body lift, do it now as it makes life a lot easier. I did mine halfway through and it gave me alot more room to get into bolts near the firewall.
U will also need larger fuel lines for the motor as the hilux ones are tiny. I took some lines off a 93 hilux surf and made them fit with some teck screws hahaha. but it would probably be easier to head down to a pipe fitting joint and buy some solid 3/8" or 8mm line and get a pipe bender and do it properly.
There is more but i cant remeber it all at the moment.
This is not as easy as everyone says it is, i had to do a lot of custom work on my Lux.
thanks for that info.. do you have any pictures of the install at all??
hay did you go for room if you used the rear engine mounts at the front with the radiator?
with my mounts i got them filled and i redrilled them, but i'm using the front ones as it gives me more room at the front and just enough at the rear to fir everything..
thanks again
I have a couple of pics but they are crappy phone quality and there is not that much to see, also i dont have a photobucket account and cant be rooted atm.
I have about 5-10mm between the engine pully and the radiator. Its is tight! (but also the diesel hilux radiator is massive).
If yours will work on the front holes, do it. I think all hilux's are different. But you will have to do something about the turbo oil drain i guess.
You will probably need to cut or hammer the body where the gear lever comes in to be able to select 5th and reverse.
Also you will have to somehow recalibrate the tacho to run from a 6cylinder instead of the old 4. I havent sorted out mine yet.
I used a the 1ggte accelerator cable and just bored out the old hole a bit and it works well.
When i used the hilux diesel radiator i had to have the inlet pipe moved.
There is probably more, i had lots of great little surprises when doing minehahaha
Yeah I know what u mean.
I sorted the oil fitler issue with the watercooling cylinder thing today as well.
Pertek had a fitting that elimated it alltogether.
The oil return I think I have sorted I just need someone with a tig to be able weld a pipe that goes directly up then goes to a t piece to miss the engine bracket.
The car orginally had a 4 speed coloum shift so I have to cut a hole for the shift anyway.
How did u go with the tailshaft? I haven't had the new gearbox in yet to see if the length is different and by how much.
I did find a hilux clutch that suits the gen 2 flywheel and is about $130 for the whole kit and is mEant to be 30% stronger... Rpm branded.
Thanks again

I dont know what your new gearbox will be like, my hilux came out with the g52 gearbox so i just bolted up to that.
My 1g is a gen 3 so the clutch is a bit different to yours. I searched on the net and ended up ordering a hilux clutch that was supposed to fit, but it didnt. So I ended up taking in my 1g flywheel and old clutch plate and they found me a heavy duty soarer or supra clutch that fitted perfectly.
i have a gen2 flywheel so the clutch bolts straight upto it perfect.. the gen3 has a clutch face of 235mm as the gen 2 has 225mm.
i'll just have to wait and see how i go with the gearbox once i test fit it.
Thanks
hay just wondering what pipe/hose peoples have used on the oil return lines... just needing some ideas to throw into the pot for my problem i have..
thanks
Hey mate, with your hose/pipe, use at least 20mm ID. I found it just helps to get the oil out without choking it up and helps to return the oil back to normal after coming out of turbo. I made a steel pipe coming out of turbo and around manifold, then in to oil/heat resistant rubber hose then back into the block. But steel all the way, would be the way to go, I will do mine one day.
thanks dude. are you still using twin's?? do you have any pics by any chance?
No worries champ. and nah, I've gone a single GT30 garret. Maybe a touch big, but I'm happy with it.
sweet thanks for that.. are you using the std radiator? what about thermo fans?
i've just finished installing all the new ball joints, shocks and front disc setup atm as it came with 4 wheel drums it now has 4 wheels disc's. also in the middle of finishing off the pwr steering setup too.
Yeah, standard radiator and 2 X 10in thermo's.
i have run into dramas with the gearbox. i have the engine and gearbox in and the engine is sitting in place but because i am using the 1g gearbox it sits lower than the standard box. do i just make up a new plate that bolts to the crossmember to suit or is there an easier way like changing the mount on the box itself to make it not so high?
thanks guys
