4AGZE 264 Tomei cams making tapping noise

i read my Tomei instructions a few times and doesnt specifiy anything other than the normal "check clearences, springs, valves and buckets" etc etc.

Mine were the same so all clearances were checked & fine.
They have 8.1mm & heavy duty valve springs so I don't think that's it.

Out of curiousity, what are the specs you set it to? I had a problem with hks 272's in 2jz that was loud and ticking, shimmed it tighter and its factory quiet..

Would be keen to know your specs, we'll know straight away if that's the cause

Wade are pretty shit for cam advice, told me the 872a or whatever was fine on stock valvetrain when its not.

a little off topic sorry but this is not true, I had wade 872A cams on mine with completely stock valve setup. no odd noises or odd wear to speak of. they are the same spec as the pon cams, 8.1mm lift and 267 advertised, but has same actual duration

Must of been a different profile as the lift was right on the edge of spitting out the shims.
With the profle of the cam and the lift right on the limit they were not a 'safe street drop in'

possibly 8.5mm nick, i know anything above 8mm its required (well really above 9mm lift, 8 to 9mm is a bit of a grey area) so if it was 8.5mm lift it probably would be very close to spitting the shims

Yeah was the 1056a (8.58 lift) profile, nobody I asked aside from Wade would recommend them on stock valvetrain.

Im not sure on the clearances but I've had two different workshops look at it & they both said everything is within the standard tolerances, I even had TERRA come over & he checked it out. I read somewhere else on here that someone had a similar problem & all it was, was the gasket on the exhaust manifold.

Is your cam-belt tension o.k? (not too loose)

If all the clearances are ok and oiling is not an issue check the collets and retainers? If you have new collets and retainers it could be as simple as the angles are slightly miss matched and they never seat properly to each other, it sounds just like your vid, this rattle will go away once revs are onboard, its not a good scenario as eventually the collets will pull through from wear and drop the valve.

Thanks for all your responses guys. I finally got it back after getting it looked at, a couple of the clearances were slightly out so I got it all shimmed & now its much better & has eliminated most of the tapping noise. Now it seems one of the buckets is making a noise but hey I can live with that.
