    Default 18RG misfiring, help?

    Hi guys,
I'm a total newbie to this forum. I recently purchased a TA22 with an 18RG. It runs ok but misfires a bit. I've tried changing the plugs and leads, it seemed to fix it a little but not completely. My mechanic reckons the points look new, so I've ordered a new coil and will get the twin solex's tuned after that. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

Does it misfire under load or at idle?. Like you said replace the coil and any other cheap disposable component (rotor button, dizzy cap, condensor) so as to rule out any faults from that side of things. Then get it tuned. Any reputable tuner should be able to find and sort out the misfire. Has the motor had any work done to it or is it just standard?

I was told it had internal work done. But not sure what. It misfires when your cruising at a steady pace mainly. But when you give it a bit of gas, it doesn't do it.

When my 2TG had intake valve clearances too tight it would misfire through the carbs every so often, but mostly when cold.

The clearances are easy to check with a set of feeler gauges. Resetting them is another story...

Start with basic tuning which you seem to be doing. Points, plugs, leads and lets not forget on a points ignition system the condesnsor. Check and correct tappet clearances and a compression test is a must. I forget the dwell angle offhand but your compressions should be around 160 psi +/- 10% at engine operating temp. Carbs. A bit of hose is a friend here. Remove the air filter or air intake housing when the engine is at operating temp. Allow the engine to idle and listen to each air intake. If the carbs are tuned correctly each should sound the same or make the same "Whoorr" noise. To check jetting again you need the engine at operating temp but also an infrared temp gauge (one of those gun things) and measure each exhaust port close to the manifold flange. You should have even temps of around 160-180 degrees C across all ports or even temps. I personally think that you are looking at either a flogged out distributor shaft or if not the bushes in the dizzy are long gone

Well I fitted the new coil this morning. And I'll get it tuned on Monday, it's pretty hard trying to find someone to tune the carbies hey. Does anyone know someone in Sydney?

Tuner reckons he fixed it this morning. He said I have a faulty vacuum advance on the distributor. But he's tuned around it. Has anyone heard of this before? He said if I'm not happy with the tune, I can replace that part to fix it 'properly'
