Toyota 4AGE-MR2 Tranny Questions?

Hello Forum Members: I'm a Sports Car Club of America competitor in the United States. I am looking for information relative to gear ratios that can be adapted/transferred from various C5XX or C160/C60 transmissions with Helical or clutch type LSD units. Here in the US toyotas especially MR2s are seriously disadvantaged to the Hondas and Volkswagens in road racing. Further, information or knowledgeable people in the US is sorely lacking at best and therefore one must go where individuals know Toyotas and have the avalability of these items. Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated. Specifically, 1. can the 1st thru 5th gear ratios from a C160 or a C60 trans fit a C52 tranny case? 2. Can the helical or clutch type LSD from a silvertop or blacktop tranny fit a C52 tranny case? 3. Can the final drive ratio(4.8) from a turbo Starlet(EP 82) fit a C52 tranny case. As I understand it, the turbo Starlet uses a C52 tranny. Is the turbo Starlet tranny the same as the C52 for the MR2(1985-1989) in USDM? Please respond yes or no with any information or leads that you may have.

You can fit a C160/C60 gearset inside a C52 gearbox case, but you need the end case as its longer to cover the extra 6th gear.
LSD wise, the factory helical from the UK ZZW30 spyder (5sp / 6sp) fit into the C50/C52/C56/C60 boxes with just a bearing swap and swap to SW20 NA driveshafts. Paul Woods from Woodsport in the UK has done this conversion / mix'n'match before for a project car.

easiest and most straightforward swap would be to get a C160 with helical diff already in it.

trdee: In the US trying to find a C160 with a helical LSD is like "trying to pull a molar from a three headed hydra". Specifically, most JDM importers don't know what you are talking about or don't want to check the tranny label to see if the tranny has the helical LSD. Others will only sell the tranny with a blacktop engine with no guarantee that it will have an LSD in it. In short you pay your hard earned money and hope for the best. If it is not what you want, they will not refund your money and you're SOL. At a cost of $1,200-2,000 dollars US that becomes a tough pill to swallow. Currently, I have a C160 but the label is missing to determine if it is helical LSD. I've tried every known test(spinning the wheel on one side while a buddy holds the other side to see if it is LSD or open diff) i can find to no avail. Any ideas short of tearing down a good tranny in my race car? Are there reputable dismantlers in Australia I can deal with? Be mindful I've been ripped off in the past by two in Australia and one in Japan on other items. Any additional info would be most helpful. Thx. for your quick responses.

I always thought there was 1 easy way for telling an LSD, well it works for clutch packs, never actually checked see if the same for helical. maybe Knightrous can check see on his helical if this also works for them?

take the driveshafts out and look through the box. If you see a single bar through the centre and you see air space straight through on both sides of this then you have an open diff. If you see solid stuff and can't see through the other side at all. then you have an LSD.

But like I said I have never seen through the center of a helical so I am not sure if these look like an open.

couldnt you buy a non LSD c160/c60 etc and install a kaaz/TRD LSD into said box?
