    Default 4age gearbox help please!

    Hey guys,

Ive set up my gearbox but clutch still won't engage...ive Got a w55 celica gearbox mounted to a 4age 20v silvertop with stock flywheel and clutch plate. The clutch fork and thrust bearing are from the w55. Ive extended the slave cylinder pin thinkin thats the problem but i don't think so...could it be the different thrust bearing? I don't know enough about the mechanics of cluthes to work it out myself and need some input from others that have done similar conversions...

In a nutshell ive got a clutch, but even though the fork is pivoting i cnt engage the clutch while cars running...any help would be greatly appreciated!

What does 'won't engage' mean? There's no connection between the engine & drivetrain/transmission, you can put it in any gear when the engine is running to no affect?
What's the pedal feel like, heavy resistance all the way to the floor, starting with about 10mm or so of freeplay?
What will happen if you put it in gear with the engine off, handbrake engaged and while holding the clutch pedal on the floor, try to start the engine? Does it start up & still holding down the pedal, can the gear lever can be moved towards neutral with extra effort and result in it jumping towards neutral with a mechanical/metallic pop?

The throwout bearing carrier is to short.
When the fork pivots the bearing is still to far away from the pressure plate so it wont disengage the clutch.

what bellhousing do you have, niteparts sell a carrier to suit there bellhousings ,it should work with others.

Its like theres no clutch. I started it up on the hoist when i put it in and the pedal feels fine, normal amount of resistance.

I got it running on the hoist and started it in gear and the transfer to the transmission is fine just the clutch doesn't engage enough to lift the plate i think? While its in gear it does pop back into neutral like normal though. I have a feeling the thrust bearing may be too thin and not thick enough? I don't know the difference between a rwd corolla bearing and the ra65 celica one but will probably be buying a corolla one tomorrow...

I do have the gearbox off again now and i can see that the bearing is touching the plate. My boss is going to have a look in the morning (he seems to know everything haha) so hopefully he can tell me otherwise ill get another mechanic from down the road to have a look tomorrow night.

Sorry i wasn't more exact in the first post, im not good with technical phrases about gearbox's haha. Thanks for all and any input, much appreciated!

Ok did a google search, is it the release bearing carrier that i'd require?

There are only 2 types of bearing, 1 with a flat face to push on a pressure plate that has a flat plate on its spring/levers, and 1 with a curved surface that contacts the springs fingers directly.

'It's like theres no clutch' would mean to me that the clutch does not engage, there's no power going from the engine to the wheels, you can put it in any gear when the engine's running, using the pedal or not, without any effect. But I think you might mean that it does not disengage, the normal push to the floor does not allow it to go into gear when the engine's running.
Then 'pop back into neutral like normal' says that the clutch isn't dragging, it's disengaged enough so there is no load on the trans.
Sorry, I still can't figure out hat you've got.
I can say that the only time that the slave cyl. rod/pin needs to be lengthened is if the slave piston is ready to pop out its bore or even if it's coming close to the edge. A longer rod may not allow the clutch to completely engage if the piston is bottoming out.

Ok it must be that it doesnt disengage then...the transfer to transmission is fine, however i cannot change gears while its running.

When inside pedal feels fine as if clutch is working normally but i can't seem to get enough pressure to lift the clutch plate.

Ive only questioned the bearing because i have read a few things where people have had similar problems with these conversions and changing clutch fork and bearing to a corolla style has fixed it. Im going to get another bearing today to compare to the celica one and go from there i guess
