I'm pretty sure they are the same as long as they are from the same car, From what I've heard there are three different 18R series sumps depending on what K frame that have to sit above.
Would like to know if the sump on on an 18RC is the the same as a sump on an 18RG. My toyota manual shows them with the same part # but they look different. My 18RG sump is leaking and i can repair it but i also have 3 or 4 18RC sumps around and if they are the same it'll be easier to replace it.

Hi,
there are three configurations of the 18r sump. There is a the rear sump in the celica, the front sump in the hilux and the mid sump in the corona (i'm 99% sure that's correct) and they're all interchangeable. Keep in mind though that obviously if you use a sump with a different position of the bowl that it will probably hit a crossmember/steering point and the oil pickup will be different also. There are alot of people that have experimented with home style baffles in sump which are quite helpful with oil starvation issues and may be what looks different between the few that you have.

The oil pickup pipes are diferent between 18R and 18RC. Not sure about 18RG. The 18RC pickup has 3 bolts holding it onto the oil pump where 18R has only 2 bolts. 18RC oil pump is bigger than 18R also.
Hi,
that is incorrect. The only pump that is different is the 18rg. It is 5mm longer in the gearset and has a spacer to accomodate that too. You may find too that the pickup pipes are different based on being for a different sump.

The 18RC that was in my RN46 Hilux definately had a bigger oil pump in it than other18R Corona engines that i had. The 18RC had longer gears in the pump.
bud, it's more likely that someone along the line put in a higher volume pump into your 18rc as it is only the 18RG that had the bigger pump. Or may have even somehow put an 18rg bottom end into the hilux. Having had roughly 20 (or more) 18r engines over the years I can safely say that yours in an anomaly.
The only difference really between the 18r and the 18rc is emissions.

I thought the 18RC had the bigger oil pump to get more oil up to the rocker gear that was prone to wear on the early motors. The 18RC camshaft had a groove machined into it on the front bearing journal so there was a constant oil supply going to the rocker gear instead of having a cross drilled front bearing journal which didnt supply a constant flow of oil. The timing chain tensioners are also different between 18R and 18RC and the 18R has better ports in the head than the 18RC which has big casting marks that make the ports narrower
hI - you make an interesting point regarding oil needs in the engine, and i must admit i am not that familiar with the difference in design between the 18r and the 18rc in terms of cylinder head setup. BUT from everything i've found on toyodiy and my own personal experience their oil pumps remained the same. This is a handy lookup http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/xref?v=...2&s=1510233011
Regardless, the 18rg had a bigger pump than the 18RC. No doubt about it. There is a chance that the 18r had a smaller pump than the 18rc, but i've never seen one and can't find anything that can document it. My bet is someone threw in an 18rg pump into your hilux. I've had several 18rc's broken down from coronas and celicas and they all had the same oil pump/rotor assembly. The 18rg has a 5mm longer assembly hence it pumps more oil which is needed for the twin cam.
