    Default Are 1UZs LPG friendly?

Considering running LPG exclusively in my rod, it would save hassles. is LPG oil OK for this engine - do I need upper cylinder lubrication? Slight reduction in power is not a big issue as the car only weighs 1200Kg and the diff ratio is 4.3:1. I dont hang around 4WD types so I am unaware of the commonness of this conversion on regular vehicles. Just fishing at the moment before I spend money.

easier for the lpg installer to get it going

Ian, willpost up piccys when I figure out how! Its a cabriolet
Fixeruper, im 58so wont likely over revving it, that and hydraulic lock is the usual culprit for rod failure, the bolts stretch and the rest is history
Dumbass, thanks will get more info from you re alterations to loom, Im thinking gas research replacement TB rather than injection.

On the UZ subject, I have considered running one on liquid-LPG...any reason you want LPG though? I imagine it's not your daily!

I had a 36 chev with a 350 on dual gas research 510 cfm "carbys"; it went great and was cheap to boot authorities are happy with rods on LPG, nohassles with catalytic convertors and o2 sensors. Im thinking ecu controlling the spark and trans only. I want to do mucho cruising then we will drive it across to wa and up to cairns after the bugs are sorted sort of a really cool grey nomad!

    cheers

what does lpg have to do with them throwing rods? unless you are reaping the rewards of a great fuel and pushing the limits -but i thought the uz was pretty solid in terms of handling compression and high rpm?
my currenty lpg engine is the only 7m ive ever had over 8000rpm and it hasnt thrown a rod (yet haha)

re upper cylinder lube -technically toyotas all have hardened valve seats so it *shouldnt* be a worry. that said ive now had 2 7m's burn a valve not long after the conversion. one magically fixed itself one day and went back to full comp (no shit), the other ended up getting a new head put on a few months later with a "bit" of a shave. its probably a tuning thing so my fault rather than the head itself.

dont worry about "lpg oil", just use good stuff for a uz, but you can probably change it less often.

wiring is indeed a piece of cake, in my car at the moment i am using ecu for spark and auto, but the stock spark is not strong enough for 12:1 and the curve is shit so i am about to start a waste spark conversion on it. there will be very little of the original engine loom used once i do this.

go for it man, just make sure you out enough carb on it. my lpg engines always go better than my petrol ones, its all in the setup. sure a dirty taxi is gonna lose power breathing through a gas ring, but single GRA400 or impco 425 would be pretty good on a 1uz. i have impco 425 on 3lt and as above it doesnt run out of breath up top!
if/when i do a 1uz cressida it will be lpg fed for sure, with a trusty 425.

note the impco base is identical to a holley 4bbl, you could get a manifold made up and sit the gas carb on a holley throttle plate, mount it in the valley and have the uz look a bit more old school v8

I think the only thing you need to keep an eye on is valve recession, dry to it being such a dry fuel source, so keep an eye on valve clearances & it all should be good, the down side of having shim adjustement instead of hydraulic lifters ..

    One word and one comment

    Word.. Yes

Comment... Depends on the installer. Done right you should not have a problem

Well things have changed, I searched everywhere for a suitable LPG tank to fit under the rumble seat floor to no avail so i decided to scrap the LPG idea. I went out and bought a 64 litre fuel cell (no foam and -8 AN top feed, return and vapor lines) and bugger me I find a mob in NZ called PPI Propane Performance Industries who make a comparmentalised aluminium LPG tank to your specs, I think great; i'll email them only to find out that Australian rules say only import quantities of 100 or more! back to ULP....

ah, ppi. ive wanted one of their tanks for a while now. no mention of minimum orders when i emailed them (at least 18 months ago) but i heard on the grapevine that them or the parent company or something is in trouble financially and that it wouldnt be wise to order one at this time (a few months back)

What sort of space have you got to play with for a tank chuckles?
