I am rethinking my approach now. I have been playing with the sensor mount, and at the same time looking at the wheel mount. When you do the 4 bolts up the wheel becomes a saucer, you would need standoffs which is not practical. So I will be using a large aluminium standoff on the large crank pulley bolt, I will need a larger crank pulley bolt to do this. I will use the 2 original m8 holes to lock rotation.

an aluminium stand-off sounds like the way to go to me. I don't know what andrew has hiding behind the counter wheel to hold it but if you make an aluminium donut with a step in it to pick up the edge of the factory pulley then it would run true. Then using the two bolts as you said.

Dont mess with the crank bolt, you dont want any issues there. A donut with a centre bore big enough to clear the bolt would work well though with some countersunk holes to bolt it onto the balancer an an offset pair of tapped holes to hold the trigger wheel.

Andrew, sounds like it is the way to go, however as I have already got 4 holes in the pulley(I have already drilled and tapped another two on the same PCD) I am more inclined to bolt through all, rather than countersink and tap.

In answer to previous question a while back - that pic is of an 22RE or 18RG crank pulley

I spoke to Terry today about trigger wheel ideas - he reckons the outer part of the balancer can move/rotate a fair bit thus attaching a wheel to the outer part only would be a world of pain (like rotation of up to 10degrees and teeth belting the sensor. The obvious advice was caldina cam belt pulley and front seal housing modified (or newer housing with associated other stuff) attached. He seemed a bit disappointed by my low-budget-trumps-all approach.

So... another ideas came up: trigger wheel on the back of the flywheel with sensor poking thru the end plate. Plus using a mount attached to the inner part of the balancer wasn't shot down in flames (yet).

    food for thought.

    NICE!!

as an aside, can someone elighten me as to why there is a need for the crank trigger and cam trigger on an engine without variable timing?
It is just the accuracy because the crank is spinning at half speed?

crank trigger so ecu know what position the crank is at, cam trigger so the ecu knows which piston is on compression stroke. Cam trigger means COP and sequential injection.

Just thought I'd update this with drawing v1 of an adaptor ring:

(click here for fullsize image). And click here to access 3D model in the Trimble 3D Warehouse.

Stands ~22mm high, the thru holes are for 2 x M8 cap-head bolts to attach it to the pulley. It also needs a chamfer at the base to clear some of milling marks left from manufacture of the pulley.

Am also not sure why the centre-to-centre measurement of the two mount holes isn't 67mm as I'm sure I entered the radius for the centreline of those holes as =67/2 ?

Anyway, I'll drop it into the eMachines application/website to see how they cost it for manufacture.

Andrew: what kind of info would you need? Would a PDF of a scaled & annotated drawing help? PM me if you like.

others: fwiw, I fired up an old PC with the eMachineShop CAD application on it and created the adaptor with their software. By deleting any threading and chamfering, I could get the cost no lower than $200 for a single part, or ~$50 for a run of 4. However, the UPS postage adds $60 for one item and $90 for 4 (all USD prices). Their website appears to be broken at the moment so I'm not going bother further with them tho it is somewhat helpful to have an estimating tool attached to a CAD package.

This is the object I created:

emachineshop is a rip-off. Put the threads and chamfers back in and give it to Andrew

re: emachineshop - have never used them but their postage and costs for one-items always seemed incredibly excessive. I just like how they combined a simple CAD and estimating tool into the one package.

Have made neater looking PDF of the item in case anyone's interested: 3SGE_TW_Mount_Boss.pdf

Hey chuckster that all looks pretty easy. Were you after 1 or 4? (Re your emachine quote)
