Celica/MR2 front LSD into AE95

I probably could've made it clearer from the start of the thread, my main intention is to focus on the AE95 with off-road use in mind hence my reference to locker diffs..
This is how I came to start considering the celica's front lsd.. It would be good if such an lsd could be turned on-off with a button as in:
'off' for street and 'on' for dirt.

dont those AWD rollas/tercels etc have a diff lock button for offroad use? much like the series 1 st165.

Jonathon - I would disgree somewhat.

A rear lsd won't give "snap oversteer", but where I would get the inside rear wheel spinning with the open diff in the aw11 when I applied too much throttle in a turn, I now get grip until both wheels spin and the tail steps out with the helical lsd. Much fun!
It is not just an mr2 thing, it happens in any rwd car with sufficient power.

Fwd i am not familiar with, and my lsd-equipped 4wd van has too little power and too high a center of gravity to try it.

ps to be pedantic, the '86 aw11 mr2 is rev 1 (and the best handling in my opinion :-))

i didn't see where you were disagreeing with me? i never said you won't get it to step out if you over throttle. just that it's not the cause for the fabled sw20 snap oversteer flaw.

but a vehicle with an LSD will require more throttle than an open diff to start spinning wheels/loose traction.

if this is about diffs for offroad loose surfaces then i'm not sure if an LSD is what you want?

the AE95 and tercel are 2 very different set ups.
The tercel is true 4wd with low range.

The AE95 is also known as the all-trac wagon / sprinter carib / corolla escape etc. in other countries.
As the name suggests it uses the all-trac system same as celica's.
So, full time 4wd with with viscous centre diff-lock button.
I'm fitting lsd in the rear which isn't independant like celica's, it's T-series solid axle like the AE86 kouki but with 4 x 100 PCD.
I've seen some viscous front lsd's for celica E-series ...just wondering if that could mate up with AE95's E-series?
...and if it would make things better or worse ..on OR off-road..

Still interested to know how to adjust the plates differently in the cusco rear lsd...

Basically, depending what shape middle bar and the frame are inside the LSD determines the type of LSD it function as (1 / 1.5 / 2 Way) and how aggressive it is.

So does yours have a diff lock button like the early st165? If so then why do you need a front lsd?

Well, that's a good question..
The idea is to improve the off-road ability of the AE95 by having a set up that locks or reduces slip in the front, centre and rear.

but perhaps it's not possible to lock the front ... I don't know..

I'm not saying it's 'needed' at all... I'm just open to discussing the idea..

I don't know if the celica st165 and AE95 all-trac systems are identical in there set-up.
There were variants and upgrades to the all-trac system in various vehicles in different countries, (camrys, Rav4's, celica's, 4wd E90 chassis'd corolla wagons & sedans)
The AE95 uses a drum shaped vaccuum actuator to push and pull the small centre diff locking shaft in and out of lock.

EDIT: Just to clarify. AE95's have a viscous centre diff-locker for the auto and geared difflock for the manual..
Anyway... bottom line is, there's no off the shelf lsd for the front of the all-trac system...

Whether or not there's a small lsd or auto-locker out there somewhere that could be machined to fit ..and what effect on handling it would have, remains a mystery..

Well, I happened to buy an E58 gearbox with factory viscous LSD.

Looking at the bell housing, it's identical to the 4wd corollas E57F5 bell housing.

At a glance.. (from the outside) It will bolt straight up to the corolla 4wd transfer case, but it'll be a matter of whether or not the internals match up..
