    Default ta22 handling

hi, im currently in the process of saving moneys for a ta22 and im wondering what people think of the stock handling? because it seems to be in a way made out that its almost essential to do complete ke/ae etc etc steering conversion. This isnt a big issue, but with already quite a long list of future mod plans, im just wondering if this is really that necessary...

also, given the steering conv. isnt necessary, would lowered springs, good shocks and bushes and struts and sway bars be sufficient enough?

    thanks

Stock was fine 40 years ago but with all things have aged and been improved tenfold by newer parts.
However saying that the steering/suspension conversions do an awesome job, depends heavily on the coin you're willing to spend. depending how far you go it's the diference of tens of thousands.

but everything you listed will be more then sufficient for a streeter and the occasional track day
a lowered 22/23 with good suspension/shocks/bushs and brakes is suprisingly impressive for an older car.

ive taken my stock ta22 on a track with the stock 4.5" rims and apart from a little understeer it handled great, not much body roll, it was much better suspension wise and handling then any other australian car on the market at that time, maybe except for the escorts

change to coilover spring setup its better and use rack and pinon power steering in my opinon and change all suspension parts to pillow ball joint instead of bushings or if you want to keep bushings go for all nolathane.

see this is the problem ive found, some people say it handles great, and others say it has lots of roll and the steering dosent cut the mustard. :S

yeah im planning on going all nolathane bushes, and i would imagine that the struts and sway bars would cut out a massive amount of roll, beyond that would probably be kinda overkill?

only real other option i considered was seam welding, but that wouldnt come into play unless there was an engine conversion done, if at all

btw, made me laugh reading "rack and pinion in my opinion" hahaha

My Rally car TA22 has RA40 front struts fitted with the brakes as well, with Koni inserts and Lovells springs, the rear is Bilstein Shocks with Lovells Springs, as for the bushes they are the light blue nolathane ones that are 30% stiffer, you dont want to make these too hard. Also I have rose jointed lower control arms so I can ajust the amount of Neg I have, as for the steering that is stock, its a matter of just how far you want to go the sky is the limit.

Agreed you don't need to go all out on coil overs and R&P conversion on a nice streeter.

Most people do the RP conversion to accommodate an engine conversion - the steering box sometimes gets in the way depending on what engine you are putting in.

Re angle the front stock setup, give a lot better handling & steering. a lot more Caster and +1-3 degree more Camber.

dont think id try and later the stock setup, but rather use aftermarket stuff, speaking of, ive read somewhere that rx2 king springs can be used in ta22s and have great benefits, can anyone confirm this? has it actually been done? thanks

RX2 springs are used in the rear of celicas and lowers them a fair amount
King springs offer a 'lowered' spring but really aren't that low

yeah go rx2 springs, part no. KLFM-14 if i remember correctly (check king spring site) i have rx2 king springs lowered in the rear of my ta22 and it dropped it a shitload i think from the centre of the wheel hub to the top of the arch was 35cm and it dropped it to 29cm,and the drives no differnt from when i had lovells lowered springs in it (which was good)
