    Default Door trim repair questions

Hi I've just taken delivery of a JZZ30 Soarer and it naturally has utterly mutilated door trims. Given the lack of blue ones for sale (if you have one, PM me ASAP) I'm going to attempt to repair them.

Upon removing the drivers side trim I have discovered three separate large pieces and twelve or so smaller pieces that need to be joined, and countless small cracks...

I have searched Google for almost 10 minutes now (yeah... huge search I know) and the guides I have come across just use generic terms such as "glue" and "backing material". The only concrete thing I have discovered is that people like fiberglass matting.

So what glue do you guys use? I have some high strength araldyte around but it says it weakens around 60 degrees celcius. Which is only 25 degrees above a summer day here.

Also should I just use fiberglass as a backing material or is something else better?

    Thanks

    Ben

OK from my days of "Boat builderdom" I'd either use chopped strand matting or dynal to repair the basic structure of the door trim using a resin such as West System or the international paints product which name escapes me at this time. They stopped using Araldyte in the 80s as that seemed to fall apart above ambient temps of 40 deg C. After repair of the basic structure you can recover in a material of your choice using any contact glue with the best being made by either Ados or 3M. The latter is expensive and the former you can get from Bunnings under another name which also escapes me at this time but around $40 for a 4 litre tin. Be sure to use either product in a well ventilated space or it will knock your socks off and stinks for about a week afterwoods

So a better resin than araldyte it is, combined with fibreglass matting.

    Re: recovering

I'm just going to leave the stock vinyl on there for the moment. Tears and all although my 300se mercedes had the most luxurious velour trim... Costs and time are too much for a complete retrim to match a door card
