as the heading states what kinda power and abuse can an r154 gearbox take?
I constantly hear different things... some people say no more than 250rwkw (which i find hard to believe) some people say 300rwkw and some say 350rwkw.
So what power would be safe to run in this r154 gearbox?
thanks

Gearboxes are usually rated in torque capacity, generally not power.....
Also driving style has a LARGE amount to do with it...

With you best educated guess is it something that is going to last months or years?

Definately years as long as you dont thrash it around like Rona does with his 'shifter'.
A huge factor in the lifespan of a gearbox which people often overlook is the clutch. A big clutch with harsh engagement will drastically increase the shock loading throughout the drivetrain, and this can kill a gearbox quickly. I've seen a MkIII with a basically stock 7M-GTE lunch an R154 twice, after the 3 puck solid centre clutch was installed. Similarly, my car started smashing W58's after I put the 5 puck clutch in.
Having said all of that, I think 280rwkw should be OK if you're not stupid with it, but for peace of mind you should consider upgrading the thrust washer which is a known point of failure for the R154.

ok cool... so this thrust washer you talk of how hard is it to fix? and how much am i looking at?

I got a case hardened one made for $80....its fine, Dont try and pull the box apart urself unless you are very very observant and patient...
I run a ~450BHP v8 with an 11" Clutch through mine, and its holding up fine...the only thing i hate about the r154 is the truck shifting technique used...Long throw so im in the market for a short shifter...
IM confident it will handle the power when i put a blower on it down the track - hoping for 650hp or so, the diff im sure will cark it, but the box should be ok hopefully...
blake
thanks for that... so it is a case of removing the gearbox and pulling it apart to replace that thrust washer? so it that case majority of the money will be spent in labour not parts?

I run 500+hp at the wheels through my R154 virtually every day of the week (well, perhaps not the full 500hp, but a significant portion of it). The box sits behind a 2JZ + big single turbo. Unsure of torque figures it's putting out, but I'd say "a lot". Still fine after 12 months of use (abuse?) and was previoulsy behind a mid 200kW 1JZ setup for 2 years.
ok dont flame me but what gearbox is the r154 out of?
Off the top of my head:
JZA70 Supra Turbo
MA70 Supra Turbo
JZZ30 Soarer Turbo
cool that sounds like the one in my hilux. its a supra 5 speed with the steel sandwich plate. ive been told that it the turbo variant??
