Probably an R151... very similar to an R154, different ratios for "truck" use.

it is more than likely a W58 from the non turbo supra.

I put 362rwkw through my R154, but something has gone pop, will be looking to remove box and find the cause.

they can handle more than most people will put into the street engine. under racing conditions ive seen a few last 2 race seasons with 650hp and 12 inch slicks. the main problem is the syncros! they get a bet crunchy from flat shifting or close to flat shifting very quickly.
bloody strong for a factory box.

IE if you dont flat shift, they last quite well!

you are correct - the $ spent is in man hours

"turbo" version of a gbox means precisely fuckall.
1g-gte had the w58 behind it in many (all?) manual examples, so I guess it's a "turbo" gbox.
in a 1200kg car, the R154 should last significantly longer than in a porky mk3 supra, and since it's for street use, you won't have slicks or anything nasty on it. just go for the nicest clutch that will hold your power (read: 3-button and triple plate are not cool)

Hey i have just bought a R154 how just looking at it from the outside do you distinguish that it is for sure an R154 and not just a W57 or W58 etc?

Like the Dong, you judge it by it's massiffness! The R154 should be about 1 and 1/2 times bigger than a W58. It's dead easy to spot one if you've seen a few gearboxes.

gearbox life relies an incredibly large amount on how you drive it, and the load that goes through it.

if your constantly dumping the clutch in an attempt to get it off the line, if the clutch is a very harsh item, that feels like it will hold 1000 hp without so much as a tiny bit of slip, your gearbox will not last long at all.

if you drive it sedately, and the clutch isnt an on/off jobbie, you can expect it to last a while.

the gist of it is, put alot of shock through it, it will die.

"I8A4RE" had a 1JZGTE putting out 312 KW at the tyres, however, due to the lag of the massive turbo that was strapped to the 1J, the car did well, and survived with a W58 behind it.

he later unpgraded to a 2JZGTE, cracked 420 KW at the tyres, whats interesting is, the W58 thats still behind the motor, survived, with a twin plate clutch, yet 2 TRD LSD's gave up the ghost, he now runs a locked centre, so the whole driveline experiences even more fatigue.

goes to show, that alot of it comes down to how you drive it.

the W58 is a strong box, when compared to alot of others (T50 etc. etc. granted, they arent a "performance" box, but the W58 is built more solidly).

the R154 is known for being even more robust than the W58, so, youve got even more margin for hammering.

the V161, once again, was again an upgrade, so it can handle it even more.

if you clutch dump, thrash etc. a car with fat rubber, and a hefty curb weight, you'll kill any gearbox.
