Default Help - Life span of ignition leads?

My SV21 Camry is misfiring quite badly at the moment a day after getting serviced. I've had 8mm Magnacor leads in the car for about 6 years. Is this the normal lifespan for leads on a street driven car?

The mechanic said I am better off going back to the factory leads and cap. Not sure myself

That's interesting. I originally bought the aftermarket racing leads because the number 2 factory lead kept popping out. But that was probably the only reason why it misfired and only under engine load.

This time around with the aftermarket it's misfiring at idle as well.

That's one point scored for the factory leads.

genuine is the way to go
if the lea kept falling down you just need to slide the casing back and squash down the little metal thingy that goes onto the end of the spark plug so it grips on a bit better.
after 6 years id be saying its probably time to be getting some new ones eh

it started to misfire a day after you had it serviced......did you get the plugs changed. they may have damaged one, causing it to crack and thus causing a misfire.

you can determine which cylinder is mising and replace just that lead (if it is a lead). that might save you some cash, if thats what you are concerned about

Any reason to suspect the leads?

Am I right in thinking everything was fine, you get a service and it starts misfiring? If so I'd guess during the service something was broken/maladjusted/forgotten to be reattached and it is their problem. Take it back and explain the situation to them. They should help you out.

just bought myself a 1984 ae71 wagon, has only 124,000 k's but still has the original (22 year old!) genuine leads. ran like a bucket when i got it, but after changing points, dizzy cap and rotor it runs perfect (for a 4a-c), so 22 year old leads still good - Go genuine!

hmm, the silicone absorbs water over time. which is why they get crap after a while.
    id be suggesting replacing them.
for those motors theyre cheap as, like bit over 50 bucks. try getting LPG leads for a 1GGTE....185 bucks later

my brothers KE10 had 35 year old leads and still going ok.. after playing with them for a bit, an idle misfire slightly developed...

old leads that haven't been manipulated are still surprisingly ok

really depends on to many things! heat, moister and how you rip them on and off etc! some can last a few hours and some will last 50 years!

It's like most things. Look after them/handle them correctly and they will last. I still have my original (genuine) leads on my RA28 (29 years).

Replaced my ST162 leads yesterday, as well as plugs, dizzy cap and rotor button. Leads themselves had 1992 imprinted on them, so I'm guessing from that (and their deteriorated state) that they'd had 14 years of service.

And on that note, can anyone suggest the best place to purchase NGK leads?
