how much does an 18RG weigh?

an 18RG when weighed on the same scales that i used to weigh my 1UZ, 1JZ and 3TGTE weighs 175Kg's.
which is ALLOT, i knew these motors were heavy but i didn't think they were this bad!

anywho, this is how i weighed it and this is what was included in the weight.

jeebus christ, that is a little weighty.
That said though - the carbies and manifold are about 2-3kg heavier than EFI version, the cast iron exhaust manifold is probably around 10kg heavier than a set of extractors......


..... and the block is a massive cast iron lump of tractor motor.

That engine lifter is what caused it to be excessive. Did you have the fan belt on there too?

Otherwise, nothing wrong with how you measured it using two bathroom scales, good work cause now we all know how heavy these suckers are.

after i posted that i wondered if id fucked it up because 170 is allot!
so i did some googeling and it turns out 170 is on the money, there is even a thread on the old forum confirming the weight.
my 1UZ weighs 205Kg's with aircon pump, power steering pump, alt, manifolds and starter. the 18RG is a serious lump of iron!!

ill be weighing the 2TG out of my TA23 in future to compare but dam the 18RG is a heavy lump for what it is.

and i didnt go down the masterton side at all unfortunately. i wanted to spend as much time in the south island as i could so i missed much of the north island. i figured i can see this island with a bit more ease so ill be doing that in future.....

hey doesn't this break the rules for hard real figures displayed on forums? why not the usual random rubbish figures getting thrown around without quoting what was attached to it!

good work sheepers, it has confirmed what a few of us have suspected for a while now. The steel case gearbox behind one of these is also about 45 or something yes?

Makes me wonder how much an ra28 would be with a more modern driveline in it.

...yep, and upgrading to alloy case W55/57/58 is a bolt in affair too.

I can confirm from my personal experience that the W50 definitely felt heavier than the W58 when i swaped them over in my RA28 all those years ago.
The W58 is also a MUCH better gear match to the 18RG imo.


But still, the tractor motor is heavy. After all, it is a tractor motor.

Hi,

P51 gearbox is the best behind an 18R-G. The W58 is nice also, especially that long 5th gear for cruising.

Excellent to see some solid info - as mentioned much better than the "about 150kg" or "lighter than a 1UZ" or "they're heavy" you generally read on teh internetz.

I will endeavour to weigh my engine and box in a similar fashion before they go in the Supra.

Years ago I weighed my R-G with digital hook scale.Complete engine with manifolds,turbo,starter,alternator and flywheel: 166 kg (it have 92 mm bore and sidedraft carbs with alu plenum)
Stripped the manifolds so there were only alternator,engine mounts and flywheel: 136 kg
W51+rear mount support and oil: 51 kg

Guy here at work weighed his 3SG engine and said it topped just over 200kg!!! Is this true?

what did the motor have on it? was the gearbox attached?
i don't reckon a weight statement is any use without pictures so you can see for yourself exactly what was included in the weighing.

but a 3S with the standard accessories (PS pump, air con, alt, zorst, flywheel) would be pretty hard pressed to top 200.
