turbo whine

the chaser being my first turbo car, and not having any experiance with others, is it normal for a turbo to whine a bit (only a very small amount) when its cold? Have recently repalced the turbo because it started to whine REAL bad (bent the turbo shaft, exhaust wheel disintegrated after having an intimate meating with the housing).
Is it normal to have a bit of a whine? If so, how much is too much?

Is it an OEM turbo? They don't normally whine on startup, it's possibly an oil supply issue (which could have killed the other turbo)

hmm, yep, standard turbo. Do 1jz's have an inline filter anywhere? the feed & return lines were clear, but being in a rush i didnt check the flow.

I don't know that much about JZs, but I'd assume that the only oil filter would be the main one.
