ive put a 4age into a KE70, so ive been through all this, the fact is, that while there maybe car parts in new zealand, that exist, doesnt mean they're here in Australia, if they are, im willing to bet they're rare as rocking horse shit.

If you don't "know" don't post. You also stated that AE70's don't exist, not a helpful tech contribution.

Well so far Oldcorrollas is the only one with any worthwhile information. I thankyou for this.
The gearbox in my car is a cable clutch K50 from either an AE70 or AE85 with the 3A engine in them. They are very few and far between here and were more common in NZ. I have converted the extension housing to a KE55 5 speed so that I can use the original hole in the tunnel of the Sierra and keeps the shifter away from the transfer case lever. Looks like ill have to find myself a KE70 K50, hopefully their more common around here and see if it all works out.
the KE55 and KE70 5 speed extension housings are absolutely a bolt on affair. the selector rod positions for both K50's is identical, so if you have a KE55 one, then it is same as KE70.... (in terms of bolting bits onto the main housing...)
i would be fairly sure that you can use the guts of EITHER a KE55 or KE70 K50 in yours...
i've swapped KE70 internals into KE10 housings, and KE10 shift rods and extension into KE70 housing.. amongst others![]()
so i'm pretty sure you will be ok, regardless of which you get...

can i ask...how long do we expect a K50 to last behind a 4age?
surely if given a bit of punishment it would be worse for wear before long...

1. it's in a sierra 4wd, so it's a bit different..
2. 2nd gear breaks from flatchanging, but will last if not abused.
3. layshaft bearings and shaft are very prone to wear and failure.
as for behind a 4A? 4A don't have that much torque...
unless driving hard, there is no reason for it to fail prematurely.
any gearbox can be broken by abuse![]()

Ill second that. This particular gearbox has lasted me for 6 years, 3 100kw 4AGE engines, 3 rear diffs and 2 transfer cases. Now tell me it wont hold upOriginally Posted by oldcorollas

In my short existance, I've seen the death of several T50s, but never killed a K40/50 yet (admittedly always behind a K engine!)
mm, but were the T50's behind a 4ac or 4age?
a k box would take a 4ac easily, but i dont rate it against a 100 kw starting point

One of them was behind several WELL abused 2T's, (that one died from sheer abuse) another was behind a turbo 4AG (that one died from torque)Originally Posted by love ke70
A 4AG doesn't put out a whole lot of torque, it just revs a lot better than a 4AC and is therefore a better thing to drive, but it's not a gearbox breaker.
K50 behind a 4A will only really die from abuse, same as most gearboxes. Generally if you have the cash you go T50 in NZ, but the cost of the A to T bellhousing is getting crazy. Unlike Oz we never got a huge amount of 4AC's with the correct bellhousing so its all JDM stuff, the AE70/85's are more common than AE86's so the boxes are cheaper. In Oz though there are very limited applications where you would even consider an A series K50 behind a 4A, mainly due to them being far to rare and the T box being easier to source.
