Default G-series hilux live axle tech factory specs

I am in the process of rebuilding my Hilux g-series live axle and have two questions I can not find the answer to in my rebuild manual nor on the web, I thought some knowledgable person on here might know:

    1. How much resistance / force (torque) should be required to turn one axle of a factory clutch type g-series LSD when the other axle is held in place if the LSD clutch pack is healthy?

    2. What is the factory specification for endfloat of the axles, measured when bolted into the housing?

    Thanks in advance!

Well I've finished my diff rebuild and found the answer to my questions along the way.

    1. Factory LSD spec appears to be a breakaway value as low as 50ft lbs to as high as 80ft lbs depending on where you look. Not particularly high in either case.

    2. Axle end float is 0.7mm or less taken from the repair manual.

May be of use to someone in the future.

Other interesting things I found out were that there are two versions of the hilux g series live axle differentials in terms of bearings. An early and a late model version with the late model one having a larger rear pinion bearing and larger carrier bearings. The carrier bearings on the late model were ID 50mm OD 83mm compared to the early carrier bearings being ID 50mm and OD 80mm.

The larger pinion bearing was a lot larger on the late model one on the bearing OD. I didn't measure the difference though.

    .
I think you will find the early ones were ID 45MM and OD 80MM

Actually that's a third version as mine has the 50mm ID and the 80mm OD. I found out the hard way when I ordered the 50mm ID bearings only to find they didn't fit the bearing caps due to the 83mm OD. The supplier said it was odd but often happens with Toyota around the change over period between variations.

So essentially there are 3 different sizes for the carrier bearings and two for the rear pinion bearing.

I initially thought the two carrier bearing sizes only referred to ID but it's a combo of ID and OD to give three combinations.

    Cheers.

Thanks for pointing out the 45mm version. I saw centers advertised for these diffs and after what I experienced I thought the two bearing sizes they referred to was for OD only.

Just an FYI for anyone looking at replacing their centre with a Trutrac torsen...... I had a talk at length with the guys from Eaton a couple of years ago when I did a group buy.

    They said:
The 913A610 is actually for the 4-pinion version of the G-series diff, but can be used in the 2-pinion version if the carrier bearings from the 4-pinion are used.
This information might be useful to someone, one day

From my experience when fitting a locker to these centres no matter what it is in we use the 50mm id/80mm od bearing because the carrier is machined for 50mm bearings. If memory is right the 4 pinion centres have 50mm bearings and the 2 pinion centres have the 45mm bearings. I haven't seen a diff come out of a hilux with 83mm od bearings, but i guess they must be out there. When shimming the factory lsd in a hilux i was alway told to go for about 100ft/lbs as that fells good without being too tight. At work we have a old axle part with a socket welded to it and another welded to a bit of plate, we use a torque wrench to check it, if it clicks at 90 and doesn't at 110 we leave it there. The boss has done a few hilux diffs in the past, thus the old axle bits under the bench. By the way, if anyone wants to put a lsd into the front of an 80 or 105 landcruiser the hilux one can be fitted.

What you just said is exactly what Eaton said to me when i talked to them:
    - 2pinion centres = 45mm ID/80mm OD bearings
    - 4pinion centres = 50mm ID/80mm OD bearings

They then recommended if you were replacing the centre, to get a centre to suit the larger ID bearings, and then replace with the larger bearings (cos you should be replacing bearings anyway)

Cool, the old memory wins again with the pinion count being the common denominator. Doesn't happen too often

I have seen one hilux that had a 4 pinion centre in the rear and a 2 in the front, however, that could of had a wrecker special diff in it at some point.

Just for your information ARB don't even give you the option of 45mm carrier bearings, if you want a diff lock it has 50mm carriers. When we buy the bearings the two of them cost under $50 anyway, i wouldn't even bother pressing the old ones off the old carrier for that, half the time you would damage them a little anyway if you tried.
