Default Quick Oil question - Turbo/non turbo oil?

Being as this will be my first oil change on a turbo car, I have a couple questions, being as the oil I was specced seems like an odd choice.

I actually went to the local Toyo dealership to get some oil (it's surprisingly cheap) for my recently aquired 3S-GTE.

What they supplied is 10W-30 SL (green label) but it says on the bottle that it's VVTi compatible. I am just curious, have they given me the correct oil, as I had always thought turbo motors needed something different for the increased heat of running through the turbo/coping with boost etc. It also seems kinda like a fairly thin oil to be running in what is now a fairly old style motor.

What oil would you reccomend? I currently run Castrol Edge 10W-60SN in my other NA car, would this be acceptable too?

If you were doing lap after lap at barbs, I'd look into 10W-50 or 15W-50 but for stock car driven around on streets, I would just roll with the 10W-30.

How many km's on the motor? Been looked after? Even after considering that I still only put in 10W-40 for summer and 10W-30in winter based on gut instinct. Gotta hook up that oil pressure gauge one day. That's for my silvia with a 220k km NA SR.... which I need to change the oil for before the next Red mist day.

I wouldn't be running crazy 10W-60 in your motor either. It's a 4a, it's rebuilt right? 0W-30, it'll make more power that way.

The engine, I'm told has 30,000km since being swapped in, so no idea on total km. Doesn't blow smoke that i've seen, seems ok for it's age. It's definately not a track car LOL.

The 4A makes enough power as it is hehe.

yeh i use FUCHS syn 10-30w and it's whats recommended for the 3s.

doesn't matter if it's turbo or not. so long as it's good quality oil.

if the engin'e getting worn/using oil etc you can use something a bit thicker.

Maybe stick with a full synthetic for the superior lubrication and heat resistance properties that is generally the case?

    ST215 pre-VVTi 3SGTE uses 10W-30 also.
i use Shell Helix HX7 AJ 10W-30 atm and change every 4-5000km. (it has same spec as in the toyota manual..)

you might use 10-40 is a really hot climate, but i haven't had issues from -20 to +40 deg so far with the 10W-30

    60 wayyyy too thick

PS. BigW has the HX7 for $39-40ish.. supershit for about $43-44

how much was the toyo oil?
how much for fuchs/where to get?

Doesn't pretty much every "performance" oil these days (Nulon, Penrite, good Mobil/Valvoline/Shell/Castrol) say that it's suitable for turbo cars? Maybe back in the 80s it might have been an issue, but these days turbo'd cars are that prevalent that an oil manufacturer would be stupid not to support them.

If you can find out what oils was previously run stick with that, the engine obviously has no problems running that. Castrol is good oil that isn't crazy priced, I run the edge sport shit (5w30) in my wifes new rolla, however that is just what i can get for the right money that meets what i need. Just run the best oil you can afford and use a genuine filter, the aftermarket one costs about $7 and the genuine about $16, so for $10 more don't have maccas for lunch one day. You can take the oil brand advice from lots of different people and they will all have there own oppinions when in truth there isn't alot of difference. Like i said though, find out what was in it and try and use that again though, you know the engine likes that oil.

Going against convertible's advice, I switched from my usual valvoline durablend 10w-30 to nulon 10w-30. I dunno if my mind's playing tricks on me but holy shit, it seems quieter (less rattly) while driving and smoother. Only bought it because it was the only oil in 10w-30 at the shop (and it has a cool looking bottle) aside from valvoline engine armour (SN rated) and mobil1 5w-30 which I will not buy for SR (and it's expensive) although it was SL/SM/SN rated which I don't get.

The car needs to be serviced more than every 6 months though and it's only running 10w-30. After about 4.5-5 months of using the same oil, the bottom end knocks loudly 4 or 5 times before the oil pressure comes up.

DO not use gear oil!! That & 50 in the winter is the extent of 'wrong' oil choices you can make.
Besides those, different oil brands are never the cause of short turbo life, only the driver's poor maintenance, poor startup and poor shutoff procedures. Change lube, don't rev at startup, especially with an empty filter and don't rev at shutdown.

my preference is for Elf or Penrite Sin 10(5)w30

with the (claimed) kms on your engine, I'd say run 10w30, if you're burning it up it to 10(15)w40.

My 2jz-gte vvti has ~100K kms, including track work, and only uses 10w30.

Generally, lowest viscosity that doesn't burn oil is your choice

Yeah, there is always cases where the existing oil is shit, and i have seen some weird things with valvolene oil and won't use it. I have seen engines use more fuel with valvolene oil of the claimed same weight, but that was when i was a kid following dad around at work (bosses son) and i have seen lately some valvolene oil which a customer supplied be thin shit like water, which would explain your increased engine noise with it. Just find an oil your engine is happy with and your wallet is happy with, doesn't really matter what brand, and it'll all be apples. By the way, motul and royal purple should not be sold to wankers and bogans, they should just give them gtx3 and take the extra money off them, won't make a difference to there fully sic skyline or vl what oil is in it for lapping......

Just remember oils aint oils, or are they????
