You have to remove the axles before removing the centre. Permatex and Loctite, amongst others, make suitable sealants, just get the one suitable for diffs and transmissions.

As you noted, unbolt the tailshaft as well.

Don't forget to drain the diff before you remove the centre and axles.

Far out such a big job for an oil leak. I'm already swearing before starting any work!
What do I need to do to get the axles out? Take off wheels and brakes obviously. What else is there?
    Thanks for ur help guys

If you take the wheels and drums off, then undo the four bolts holding the axle in. Put the drum over the studs backwards and loosly put the wheel nuts on (like 2 or 3 turns) and then use the drum like a slide hammer. The whole job is actually really simple and can be done in about 1.5 hours by someone who is mechanically competent and a vehicle who wants to be fixed. Use the genuine toyota sealant, go to spare parts and ask for a tube of seal packing black part number 08826-00080-A, it always works. Just make sure you scrape all the old gasket/goo off beforehand. Remember to undo your filler plug before your drain plug too

Ok so I've taken of the drums, removed the axle bolts and undone the diff bolts. I've pulled the axles out about 80mm. is there a trick togetting the diff out? Is loose and I can almost get it out past the bolts holding the center in but it won't come. I've also taken the handshake cables off

I just pull them all the way out, but 80mm should be all the way out of the centre, if not awefully close. The centre is probably just getting stuck as the crownwheel comes out the tube, can be a bit tight sometimes. If the axles are all the way out, the centre has to come out
