    Default w58 rebuild help please

Gday guys, I am about to crack open the w58 before I fit it, are there any tricks or things to watch when pulling apart?
What are the usually the first thing to wear etc, or to look out for.
Any help would be much appreciated
    Cheers

labels, labels, labels! you really need to note what went where, and don't get things mixed up.

i've had the front cluster bearing fail before, mainly cuz of lack of oil. still, it's a good idea to replace the front bearings, as they get the most use.

in a gearbox there are heaps of things to look out for. got a manual?

you will have to remember how it all goes back together, there are a fair few bits in there.

check out the bearings and syncros and condition of the teeth on the gears. if you get mixed up, then LOOK OUT. it will be difficult to put back together

You will be sweet ! they are a piece of cake.

Make sure its in neutral when you pull it apart.
You will need to undo the circlips at the front of box to get the front case off.

Undo the selector housing and the bolt that holds the shifter linkage ( arm) then undo all the casing bolts and pull it off.

The only thing to watch out for is the spring loaded return latch for the selector rod that goes through the gearbox. Make sure that when you put box together that you have the selector rod on the right side of this latch! if you dont you will not beable to select all gears!

If you are looking at the box from the top ( box on ground and you standing above it) from memory the latch is on the right hand side of the rear housing. You will see it when you get it apart and will beable to understand what im talking about.

One thing to do is once you have checked everything out and done what you need to do.
A dummy assembly is a good idea! IE assemble the box with no gaskets to make sure that everything will go together ok and that you have a good idea of how to do it!
Then check that you have all gears and everything sounds ok when you turn it over! beats gluing gaskets and then finding out that the selector fork isnt in properly

P.S have fun removing the bearings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one of them requires a super special puller to squeeze in behind a gear. ( there is fu@k all room)

How much does it cost to get a w58 refreshed. I guess this depends on whats rooted though. Can you get hardend gears, or get gears hardened for a stronger box?

the gears are already hardened, if they weren't they'd last about a week.

    they dont have any gaskets!!

    i have rebuilt a few

there is no "special pullers" needed if you take everything apart in the right order just a long series common type of gear puller and some bearing plates for the front bearings

i get new bearings from CBC all up was quite cheep and check the 3rd- 4th selector fork they wear quite badly where they push on the barrel only about $70 new from toyota (took 2 weeks)

lastly check that the brass syncro rings dont go on to the tapred surface so far they touch the gear if they do they are worn out, i have a few sets of good used syncro's if you need some, they get removed with a dog box

clean the surface with thinners and glue it back together with grey locktite silicon gasked sealer this stuff sets nice and firm

most important .... RUN THE RIGHT OIL!!!

    good luck!

The gt35 is going on a cosmo 13b, in an r100.
Pulled the box apart tonight, I think the bearings have a little too much movement, will have a better look tommorrow, the rest actually seem ok. 1jz cheers for all that, what oil do you use? May get in touch with you if the syncros are gone.

sorry if i ask an silly questions but i'm a gb newb. Anyway what is usually involved in freshening a gb? I'm guessing bearings, syncros and gear sets are the main things you replace? Can you still get most of these parts. I just might consider doing this one day but would really know whats involved, what wears, how to determine what to replace etc. Any useful info would be great.

p.s sorry about the thread jack, sort of

almost always only bearings, synchros and seals (and shifter bushes).

    gear sets are not cheap.

custom gearsets are even less cheap.
