I cant remember the exact oil name i was using when i ran a syncro box but its like VMX or LSX or something.... one of those will be diff oil!, check with your local parts dealer or gbox shop, repco was able to look it up for me

i run a thicker synthetic for the dog set

PS. bearings all have a fare bit of play at the best of times so i wouldnt get too worried about them unless they rattle and rumble quite badly, i would look at doing the input shaft bearing anyway its only about $40

    i have rebuilt a few

there is no "special pullers" needed if you take everything apart in the right order just a long series common type of gear puller and some bearing plates for the front bearings

i get new bearings from CBC all up was quite cheep and check the 3rd- 4th selector fork they wear quite badly where they push on the barrel only about $70 new from toyota (took 2 weeks)

lastly check that the brass syncro rings dont go on to the tapred surface so far they touch the gear if they do they are worn out, i have a few sets of good used syncro's if you need some, they get removed with a dog box

clean the surface with thinners and glue it back together with grey locktite silicon gasked sealer this stuff sets nice and firm

most important .... RUN THE RIGHT OIL!!!

    good luck!

hmmmmmmmmmmm thats interresting i ordered brand new gaskets from toyota for mine.

    Got ALL the gaskets.

My bearings cost me $250 for all but one from cbc and that is trade ( wouldnt say thats too cheap)

that is STRANGE!! ... cos i have pulled apart quite a few and none had gaskets i dont know if they were W58's or W57's but a couple were straight from an importer and never been apart b4

i guess $250 is all relative i thought it wasnt too bad for about 6 bearings .... compared to $4500 for a dog set!

Hmmm ..... got me thinking i just used my little gear puller AFAI can remember wasnt too hard to get it in ... i cant remember having any trouble with it anyhow

the only one a bit tricky was the 5th barrel off the lay shaft as there is a little tin cover on the back and the puller would crush it if you pulled straight on it so ether slip in a little shim between the barrel and cover or try to get the puller on the tips only

PS . I think putting gaskets in a box designed to bolt up neat would upset all the end float clearences !!!

yes true BUT if the box was designed to have gaskets it will work in reverse !! so running no gaskets could be bad

I dont think it would make that much diff though

exactly right, they're designed with gaskets. if you don't have them, then it'll probly tighten the g/box up a little bit, putting a bit more strain on the bearings. it'd probly also affect gear changes a little.
    beer me!
