It should be printed on packaging of gaskets
Hello everyone, i'm very new here as I've just started pulling apart my 83 Corona XX (RT133) that has the elusive 21R-C engine. I say elusive as I can't find very much concrete information regarding specs.
A good friend of mine (that has mechanical experience!!) and I are planning to replace the head gasket as it appears to have blown (well I hope this is the case and not that the timing chain has worn through the timing cover, fingers crossed).
For my reference I tracked down the Haynes Celica 71 thru 85 repair manual, I found it has most celica engine specs including the 18R-C, 20R, 22R and 22R-E. I got it with the hope that it would include the 21R-C as the RA60 Celica's had the same engine. But unfortunately I was wrong.
I've also got the Corona XT130 series manual which has nothing about the 21R-C engine, but will help me wit the rest of the car. I cannot find anything on the RT133.
I'm assuming the sequence of head bolt loosening/tightening is the same as the 20R and 22R, but this is only my assumption with pretty much no mechanical experience.
I've got nothing to lose by pulling this car apart and hopefully getting her started again but I want to have the right information. I've spent several days now scanning the internet for a reference on the specs. I've found a lot but not the head bolt torque settings.
Any help, suggestions, specs and advice would be highly appreciated.
Sincerely and thanks,
TC

It's that easy.
I'll have to check it out when I get the gasket.
Thanks.
Well, we took the cylinder head off today and the gasket is fine and cylinders look ok. May need to replace the head bolts though.
On closer inspection it appears more likely that the timing chain (single) has stretched to the point of rubbing on the timing cover. Can't see a hole yet but it may be further down. Need to get some air tools happening to remove the crank wheel to get to the timing chain cover.
Still going ahead with the rebuild, now to start investigating parts and make a list.
Should i try to get replacements for the sprockets when replacing the chain?
Stay tuned.
Ooroo,
TC
My 21rc has a double chain, must be different cus its in a corona.
with the crank pulley, just use a breaker bar under left chassis rail and hit the key.

Hmmm, can I do that with the head off and the timing chain and cog loose at the moment?
You don't HAVE to replace the crank sprocket unless it has been damaged, however, no harm will come from replacing it...
Ps. Head torque for RT133 corona is:
98-118Nm
(72-87ftb)
Thanks mate, that's exactly what I was after.
I think i've got the rest of the torque specs from another source.
I think the sprockets are a bit worn so I might get a set with the new chain.
We'll see how we go this weekend.
prob not a good idea to crack the bolt using starter this late in the tear down.

No problems mate, let me know if I can be of anymore assistance...
Ps. Be wery of that harmonic balancer bolt, they can be FT sometimes, and the balancer itself can be tight at times too, good to have a "puller" on stand by just in case....
Alright, we managed to get the timing case off and found the culprit. After reading about the 21r and 22r engines it appears to be a very common problem. I shouldn't have let it get this far.
The timing chain has worn through to the water pump and chewed up the right hand chain guide.
Will need a new timing case, chain, sprockets and guides, and probably a new tensioner too.
The next question is, where to find these parts?
Any suggestions anyone? I think these might be hard to find.
Thank you.
The timing gear: chain, sprockets, guides, tensioner are no problems. You can buy them new, Ill probably be able to get you a better price on the kit...
Is yours single chain or double??
I got a few spare covers laying around...
Mik.
Thats unreal, its a single chain.
Your an absolute champ thanks for the speedy reply.
I'll need all associated gaskets from the tear down too. I've called a couple wreckers and they aren't able to help.
Thanks heaps.
I'll get you a price on a timing kit in the afternoon,
And I have a spare single row cover if your interested?
But I would advise you check it opposed to yours (for correct fitment) prior to buying it...
Mik.
That's great thanks again, are you in Melbourne?
