Iam not 100% sure but the r154 is fitted to both the supra and hilux and there are some different options.
Maybe the parts you have been supplied are for the later model hilux box.
Hello toymods, Im currently trying to rebuild my R154 gearbox atm and Ive run into some dramas and I need help. Im fitting up a new NPC clutch and while I'm at it I thought I would take care of what I thought may have been rough synchros (box didnt like to shift from 2nd to 3rd) at the same time.
Ive purchased a driftworks rebuild kit which comprised of bearings, syncros and seals..
Once I had stripped the box down, cleaned it up and started to re-assemble I ran into trouble.. The syncros for 1st-2nd gear are different to the syncros which were supplied in the drift works kit.. The syncro hub for 1st-2nd uses keys which are secured to the hub via a screw and spring and the syncros which were on that hub use a 'peg' to pick up the hub while the new syncros have a 'key way' in them.
old v new syncro
old syncro hub and key
After looking at the factory manual for the r154 transmisson I saw that the syncro hub used circlips to retain longer keys and the 'key way' style syncros rather than the screw/spring style keys and 'peg' style syncro (like all the other hubs in the box) so I purchased a new syncro hub from the US, part number 33361-22020 (toyota also list the part number 33361-30030). The new hub does not match the new syncro (hub diameter is to small, synrco wont fit into the hub) and is alot thinner than the hub I think needs replacing (this hub im trying to replace is also very different in colour to the other box parts making me believe it has been put in at some stage and did not come from the factory).
new syncro hub, circlips and keys
old v new syncro hub
So now I am at the point where Im ready to order another hub (the one which uses the other part number) but before I do I was hoping someone a little more experienced with these boxes may be able to shed some light on this problem for me. Any help would be much appreciated.

The part number Im using is listed as being for the 91 3000cc dohc supra turbo and the 4 runner.. Im buying out of the US so I dont think they have the hilux there?? But yeah I think the hilux/tacuma/tundra/supra may all use r154's or R series boxes..
Has anyone got any ideas?? I need help!!
1. R154 Transmission Rebuild Kit
R154 transmission Toyota OEM Rebuild Kit. Includes all bearings, syncros and seals. We are stocking these at our shop now! Some late model Soarer transmissions have different synchros for 1st and 2nd gear. Our rebuild kit works with all US R154's and most R154's from Soarer and Chaser up to 1997.
This is from the driftmotion product details on the rebuild kit. Hope this helps

the part you purchased is for a W box.... eg: ToyoDIY.com
33361-35030 is the "HUB, TRANSMISSION CLUTCH, NO.1" for an early R154, can be found here: ToyoDIY.com
same part is used in the 91-94 soarer R154.
The jzx90 R154 diagram shows both type of hubs: ToyoDIY.com but still lists the older part number
In the JZX100 R154 it changed to a 33361-35040, the pic shows the no.1 hub uses springs like your orignal part: ToyoDIY.com
Do you have a late R154?
Thanks for the replys guys..
JP Im not sure what the box is out of unfortunately (bought it by itself not in a half cut..)
But that link to the JZX90 box makes me think thats what I have with the updated hub.. The JZX100 diagram seems to run different syncro parts to mine and the fact that all the other syncros in my rebuild kit fit up except for the one I'm having dramas with makes me think I need either syncros to suit the updated hub or a new 'old spec' hub for JZX90.
Any recommendations guys.. new hub or new syncros?? I know syncros will be cheaper but what do you guys rekon?
ps thanks again for the help thus far..
Hey guys Im still trying to nut this out... can anyone tell me if the 5spd non-turbo supra 3000cc 1989-1992 was w58 or if it used the r154?? (talking about USDM supra).
all the non turbo's were W58
These are the guys Im ordering from in the US..
TOYOTA Parts like 33371 35020
The springs 3337135020 and keys 3336535030 seem to be right but I cant find a hub with the right part number (according to the link on toyodiy that JP posted)..
If anyone cares to look through the 3 diagrams and give some feed back that would be great
Thanks again JP. Im going to give my guy at village toyota one more go (he rekons he has the part after I linked him to the jzx90 diagram from toyodiy). If its not right I'll use those links above to order one.
OK so after all the home work a few months ago I put the early style hub (sourced from the USDM 7M turbo R154) into the box so I would be able to use the early type synchros from driftmotion and after 1500-2000km 2nd gear synchro is cactus. The box would never shift down into second from the time it went back into the car (everything else was sweet) and now that its out the teeth are fairly chopped up.
Im at the end of my rope with this box now and have given it to a specialist to rebuild this time.. the problem is he cant find the synchros required either! I have personally looked at every R154 synchro toyota list as available in OZ and none of them have the orginal offset tooth profile that the original synchros had and the gearbox builder is telling me this is why it would never shift down correctly.
I would appreciate any advice or further info on this situation.
buy some late model synchro's?
buy a new box... problem fixed.
Funny guys
After alot of fucking around I now have a rebuilt R154 and a rebuilt R154a
Anyone looking for a rebuilt box Im moving on the R154a...it has an a70 shifter housing/fork on it, new bearings and synchros. $1600.
