Default Whine in gearbox when i'm above 2.5k rpm

    Hey all,

I noticed with the zzt231 Toyota celica that when I am at say 3-4k and just coasting (letting the car roll) I can hear a whine from what sounds like the manual gearbox, its hard to explain whether its normal as its the first zzt231 i've owned.

I heard it could be the thrust bearing or the clutch. Just wondering if there is any good gearbox places I could take the car to have a look at it for me?

EDIT: This morning I noticed the noise is audible when your at idle and rev the motor with the clutch engaged (so foot off the clutch), but when the clutch is in (push the clutch down to the floor) the noise is gone. So i'm thinking the thrust bearing could be of cause? I think I can still hear a small amount of noise when accelerating. Strange part is the noise isn't as bad at say 3000-3500rpm and coasting.

Was also wondering how much it might cost to get the clutch changed if I was to supply the kit?

I'm really hoping its nothing in the gearbox, I just bought this car

If the noise only stops when your push the clutch pedal to the floor or getting nearer to the floor it is is the gearbox only that is at fault, the noise is stopping then because the gearbox components are then disengaged from the motor etc & stop rotating & hence then stop making a noise ..

One way to be sure exactly is to slowly push the clutch pedal down, whilst listening to the noise & at the same time try to gently select a gear, it should baulk you out till the gearbox stops rotating ( obviously don't force the gear lever ) if the noise stops & then you find you can select a gear then it is with out a doubt in the box ....

Generally clutch thrust bearings will get louder as you apply more movement to the clutch pedal as the load is increasing on the thrust bearing as its pushing on the clutch diaphgram more ..

^ lexsmaz sounds like he's on the money adrian.

if i was you i'd change the g/box oil. see if it helps. otherwise just drive it till it goes bang and deal with it then it might make that noise for another 100,000kms but still go strong! dont stress about it too much dude.

Thanks to both for the heads up. The noise is much quieter than i'm making it out. I am wondering if its just the normal noise of a manual when doing any sort of engine braking/coasting at 2-3k with the foot off the accelerator. My MR2 had a similar sound, but that had an exhaust so maybe i'm imagining it? I'll have to go in another zzt231 manual to see if it does the same thing.
