If the noise only stops when your push the clutch pedal to the floor or getting nearer to the floor it is is the gearbox only that is at fault, the noise is stopping then because the gearbox components are then disengaged from the motor etc & stop rotating & hence then stop making a noise ..
One way to be sure exactly is to slowly push the clutch pedal down, whilst listening to the noise & at the same time try to gently select a gear, it should baulk you out till the gearbox stops rotating ( obviously don't force the gear lever ) if the noise stops & then you find you can select a gear then it is with out a doubt in the box ....
Generally clutch thrust bearings will get louder as you apply more movement to the clutch pedal as the load is increasing on the thrust bearing as its pushing on the clutch diaphgram more ..
