    Default siezed 4age... suggestions/solutions???

    hey guys

so i got this engine from a guy who said the engine was in good running order.

have now had it a couple of months and finally got it in the engine bay to find that i couldnt turn it over.
probably something i should have checked when i firt got it...

prceeded to take the plugs out and found one was rusted to hell.
took the head off and this is what i found. (pic below)

can anyone suggest the best way to go about it? would rather not have to rebuild the whole thing if i can avoid it right away.

was thinking soak the top of the piston in WD40 or diesel for a few days then see if i can get it moving? or possibly take out the rod and piston and give the bore a clean up and try fix up the piston??

what can be done with the head?

Either way its going to need a hone or rebuild. Try your best to get it down a few mm. Clean up the top of the cylinder and remove the piston/s

Knock the piston out and check out the bore, if its not totally fucked (pitted or heavily corroded, light surface rust is ok) stick a spring type hone down its guts, jam a set of new rings in, check the end gap, if its ok-ish stick em on the piston and bang the fucker back in and away you go. It will run and if the bore is not too bad and your half decent with the cordless drill it will probably have better compression than the other 3

But yeah, soak it good in WD40/diesel/inox for a day before trying to move it. If your going to try fix it dont bother with the old piston, new ones are cheap.

Yeah, dude. ^^^agree^^^ Remove pistons clean re-hone
Nothing to do but strip it down.
Stop trying to turn it over. You risk scratching the bores.

If you decide to re-build look at it as a learning experience. You'll get to build it to your own specs.

    OR

If you're looking to turn this into a positive without losing any coin.
Pull it all apart clean each part up and sell it piece by piece. You'll make more money back than what you paid & can start again with something better.

Either way... you're back to square one and will have to spend some time on it unless you sell it 'as is', re-coupe some money & cut the rest of your losses.

    hmm,
    cheers guys,
thats what i was thinking, was hoping to get an easy fix but better to be safe than sorry

the oroginal plan was to get it running in the car standard so i can get through vehicle inspection. then once its all past rego i was going to pull it out and rebuild it with forged gear.

so i guess a new piston and rings then a quick hone to get it going.
wont know till i get it out i guess

where are you located? you're info says S.A. What inspection are you having done? I've been gone a while, but still have SA rego on a rarely driven car = no yearly inspection unless defected.

If engine isn't going turbo or race-spec, you could probably get a whole set of pistons+rings+gasket kit off eBay for bugger all.

Think of this as an opportunity to exploit the upside of the situation, instead of a random-2nd-hand motor, you'll have a rebuild motor.

Get that bore checked out though..

It could just be a blown head gasket that allowed a small amount of water in
OR it could have some damage..

By the look of the middle photo, it had a blown head gasket at the back left corner. You might need to have the head planed as well as a new piston and rings and a hone.

this is as bodgey as hell but it worked - figured it was no loss if it didn't
i had a problem just like this with a old 2.6l maggot motor and soaked it in diesel over night
next morning i found the thickest bit of steampipe i could find and with somebody else holding the pipe (with multigrips)
smacked the piston down with a blocksplitter - took some getting to move
once it was at bdc i filled it with diesel again and with about 240 grit wet & dry polished the bore
kept cranking it over by hand until it turned smooth
    slapped the head back on
hit the key and it started up easy
blew smoke for 5 mins or so
    then no more smoke
sold the car quick as (about 7 years ago) but still service it occasionally and it runs like a charm
    more luck than not though

240 grit!! thats a bit extream.
decided im going to unbolt cod rod and pulll the piston, im hoping since its pretty much at the top that there isnt any corrosion on the rest of the bore.
see how well it cleans up might get away with just new rings

should anything be done with the head?

anyone know the torque specs for putting it back together?

Are you taking the motor out of the car to take the pistons out? If you are, new rings on all cylinders would be not much more effort. Taking the piston out the top sounds like the best idea to me.
