just disconnect the negative battery terminal
I'm getting a nasty crunching sound from the switchgear when I turn the steering wheel.
I need to get the wheel off to get at the shroud to see what's going on but can't locate the Air Bag fuse.
Can anyone help out?
just disconnect the negative battery terminal
As above, with airbags, don't go mucking around. Disconnect the battery completely (negative first).
You'll need to remove the lower column shroud to then disconnect the plug for the wiring. The airbag one should have yellow conduit & have a yellow plug.
When the plug is unplugged, a special part of it connects the terminals so that there's no static. So Don't break it!
Thanks its all sorted; the bad news is the clock spring's the culprit, and a very pricey culprit indeed < $300 even from Amayama / Toyotapartscheap etc. . . Damn ! >
Edit: Stuffed part is actually the Cable Spring Assemby < 84306-12080 >. It's makes a crunching sound when rotated so I guess it's not long for this world. God-damn these things are expensive even ex-Japan. $205 ex USA but shipping is $130 for a part weighing 0.2 kg & 100mm across!!!.
Meanwhile, in Toyota AUS la-la land they cost $550. . .

I bet it's the same as a heap of other models.
People want the airbag or the wheel, not the clock spring, so it should be reasonably cheap from a wrecker
