Default FAQ - National Code of Practice - NCOP Thread

"What can I legally modify?" is a question that is asked a lot.

Over the last day of so I've read the NCOP's that relate to Vehicles.
I have highlighted in this thread the questions that get asked the most.

They can be found HERE for people who want to read the whole thing.
If you are making sure something you are building is legal, bookmark that page, and check it every month or so, because they are updated.

As far as I can tell, these ARE in force, and overrule all the rules we've been building our cars to for the past few years.

If you have any specific questions, they have emails addresses on the above page for the respective states. Those guys should know whats what.

    And here we go...

What can I mod without approval?

    What new engines need approval?

What size engine can I put in my car?

What engine mods need an Emissions Test?

Can I use an Aftermarket ECU?

What are the Rules on Rims, Tyres and Spacers?

What are the Rules on Bonnet Scoops

Do I need to keep my Demister?

What the Rules on putting the Battery in the Boot?

What do I need to do when Converting to Unleaded Petrol?

Whats the Rules on keeping my speedo accurate?

What Alternative Steering Wheels can my car use?

How dark can I Tint my Windows?

    CrUZida,
Yes mate, these are in force, at least in WA. I put through a form for a 3VZFE RA23 4 weeks ago, and got the reply, a yes, last week, subject to meeting the applicable NCOP's.
    Cheers,
    Mitch.

At least, in theory, we now have engineers being nationally consistant in being very damned vague about what can and can't be done...

    Very good thread,

I don't believe these are in force across the board at this stage (ie Australia Wide) as I just got my car engineered - completed with RTA submission last Friday - and the NCOPs were not applicable.

    Food for thought is all

I'm with shinny on this one, although from what I can see of the NCOPS they are more detailed than the previous regulations, so perhaps there will be a little more consistency

I've been looking at these recently as well and the main issue I see is ATM they aeem to be very dynamic, in the past 6 months so many little bits have changed that you need to read it right before you submit to keep on top of the most recent relevant changes.

    Good thread However....

I would doubt that they are retorspective. you just have to meet the requirments when you apply for a certificate.
As the rules are new and poeple are finding loop holes in it the they appear to keep slightly re wording it to either make it even more vauge or to make it water tight.
Engineers will still interpret it as they like.

They wouldn't be able to re-enact it retrospectively. That said, if you pulled the car off the road and then had to take it over the pits again, I'd hazard a guess that they'd make you stick to the new regulations.

    Hi,

I just had a quick squiz at their docos and couldn't find anything related to fender mirrors, so I guess that means I'm ok.

they were standard equipment on your car anyway, so the NCOPS wouldn't apply
