Default Questions on modifying fuel tank for EFI? (corolla van) PICS

Hey everyone, i want to modify my spare fuel tank in my ke70 van. i will add some pics and explain the idea i have.

Plan A: i want to weld or braze on(whichever is the correct process) a pot/bowl to the bottom of my tank just below where the pickup tube (feed line) is.

Here are two pics of my tank showing the internal feed line (1/4") and another pic showing the shape of the van/wagon tanks.

here is an ms paint drawing explaining what i want to do.

Another few things to note: the bowl/cylinder will be 80mm diameter x 100mm height, taking into consideration wall thickness of steel: internal volume will be approx 400-450mls.

the engine it is feeding is a standard 4age bigport but i have a bit of A.D.D so i get bored easy and i might decide to turbo it down the track. (maybe aim for 140rwkw)

    Questions:
    1. is the pot/bowl going to be big enough?
    2. will the idea of extending the pickup tube work at preventing fuel starvation on cornering?(a problem i'm currently having due to running a VL external pump and no lift or external surge tank).

    * I DONT WANT TO FIT AN EXTERNAL SURGE TANK*

And last thing, my plan B:
i found a pic of someone else's van running a small bowl BUT the feed line is external. i wanted to utilize the internal feed line and route the piping/hoses as per factory. i don't like the idea of that hose hanging there. (engineer might not either)

    the pic: external pickup hose

    Any ideas/tips please reply. cheers!

well anyway, for anyone that's interested im going ahead with my first plan (plan A). dropped my spare tank off at a fabricator this afternoon.
Doing as i planned, except it will drop down 80mm instead of 100mm and cutting out more of a rectangular shape rather than a cylinder. this way i will have more capacity (600ml+ ) . after closer calculations 80mm dia x 80mm height would only get me 350ml.
Pickup tube will be extended and drain plug relocated.

will post pics in a couple of weeks if anyone wants to see?

    later.

Ohh, and im pissed im going to miss Classic Japan Car Show this weekend

Should work out ok, but i would be tempted to get a EFI tank with a standard internal swirl pot & cut that out & graft it onto the bottom of your tank on the inside leaving the outside shape the same as its from the factory, i would think if you plug welded it onto the floor of your tank it should work out ok ...

Hey lexsmaz that is a good idea but due to the shape of wagon/van tanks i don't think it would work in this case. the tank is very shallow because the spare tyre fits up into it. where the tyre sits the tank is probably only 5-6" high.

    Will post pics later on.

Here are pics of the two different setups I've run for ke KE70 ute.
Original tank with swirl pot as per your first plan -

Had a small swirl pot, pickup to feed to pump and original pickup used for return line.

Fitment of internal pump from a UZ Soarer -

    First cut holes.

Then stick some stuff in the holes that was cut out of the other tank.

Roll some steel up to wrap around the pump pickup.

Some lines might be handy, feed goes to pump and return feeds back around the pickup.

You end up with this sort of thing -

Pump filter will basically sit flat on the bottom of the recessed section, this will have holed drilled around the top and then pushed about 50mm up into the tank.
More updates in two weeks when I get back from holiday.

    Looks good to me.
Neil, the wagons run the spare wheel under the tank so to rip that off you would in a bit of trouble already. Wouldn't do the same on a KE70 sedan though, would hang way too low.

    cheers WDE_BDY

^ thats right. when the spare tyre is bolted up the tyre sits lower than the diff housing because my car is fairly low at the back.. (that a 185 14" tyre)
