Default 22RE + S/C How to control fuel.

Hi all, I know this has been covered before with adding a s/c to a 22re but I would like some opinions on how to control fuel delivery.

I will be going down this path next year when i rebuild my motor, my goal is to run around 5psi, Im not going for mass power as such but more for added torque (torque monster ), we all know the 22re will never produce huge hp figures.

The fabbing of the s/c wont be a prob but getting the correct air fuel ratios while been controlled for different loads/accel postions and boost levels looks to be abit of a prob.

The easiest way to do this seems to be adding an extra injector before the throttle body, having it controlled buy a seperate fuel ecu, but will this supply enough fuel? And can this be controlled for certain boost and loads?

If the s/c is constantly running and if the injector is switched on via a MAP sensor under boost this 'should' work, the stock albiet tweaked air/fuels should be fine off boost and the added fuel controlled via a ecu should be enough on boost.

    Any ideas?

Ditch the stock ECU an run aftermarket.
If you don't want to spend too much, run megasquirt.

Yea postage would prob be as much as the motor

Wouldn't say a microtech fuel ecu be as good if not better then megasquirt? Dont really know anything about megasquirt to be honest (will search).

Microtech will be a lot more expensive, and a lot less tuneable.

You can go with your first plan of running an extra injector, which is turned on by a boost switch. If you only plan to run 5psi, and you don't want to get the most out the tune, then its a cheap and nasty system that will work.
It won't need to be a big injector either.

The joy of a PD blower over a turbo on something like this at 5psi, is it's just going to effectively make the standard engine 33% larger. The standard torque curves and fuel delivery curves will be pretty much the same (as right as they were from the factory anyway), just the volumes wrong. Unlike a turbo where you can have varying pressure and airflow for a fixed throttle position depending on load, or any combination of the above, 5psi of PD blower on a 2.4 really just makes it a 3.2L.
I would bet that provided the AFM (I assume the 22RE uses one) doesn't max out, the factory computer and an extra injector of a similar size as the stockers, pulsed off the driver for one or two of the other cylinders would probably be ok. Alternatively, if you can find some injectors about 25 or 30% bigger than your current ones (IIRC 22RE's are ~200cc low impedance????) then they could work alright aswell.
Adjust the timing so it's safe, and maybe tweak the fuel pressure up for some fine richening adjustment if required.
Won't make the low and mid range power of a proper ECU (even a cheap fuel only), but if your goals are low, then you won't be disappointed.
Is this going in a regoed car, or just a track hack or something???

Thanks for the replies, it will be a rego'd car, will be my daily. Can prob hide the s/c pretty well, it will be sitting where the a/c comp was so really only the extra piping will be a give away, plus who looks twice at a celica anyways

Im planning on doing a few events like deca's, maybe light track for fun so I definently dont want a dodgy setup.

A fuel ecu is cheap enough, especially second hand, so I can control the extra injector for the amount of boost added it should be enough adjustment regardless of load (I hope).

I thought of a 5psi limit is due to engine internals, not running forgies so dont wanna run 10psi or so and blow the thing up, 5psi seems like a safe boost level to me while still making the whole conversion worthwhile.

I like the idea of keeping the standard ecu, replacing the whole thing would be a very time consuming thing to wire and tune, just tuning a seperate injector should be pretty straight forwared in comparison.

Didn't they sell this engine turbo'd in the states? You might look into how they managed the fuel and ignition on that motor. Google 22RTE there are loads of hits.

Another thing is 1GGTE's are pretty cheap these days. Probably less work in the long run.

I would go 1ggte except for legal reason, sounds funny but atleast with a s/c 22re its the same motor, if I ever got 'done' for it it would be alot easier to rwc the motor back stock then getting a
    1ggte engineered.

Ill look into the 22rte, never thought of that cheers.

Wow way expensive haha, looks like a quality manifold though.

Im gonna go the extra injector setup, once I start actually putting it together Ill start a thread to show progress for anyones thats interested.
