Hi all,
It's been a VERY long time since I've posted on here, and I'm hoping someone on here can point me in the right direction with the following.
Long story somewhat short: My VERY long-term project car - An AE86, has what I believe to be RA40 std-strut-based coilovers in the front, and a Zenki JDM T series rear end.
I say 'believe to be' as I bought the struts from a forum member MANY years ago,and am not 100% sure of the car they were removed from. They bolted up to the AE86 steering knuckles, and run the same brake bracket flange style as the original AE86 strut,so I believe they are RA40,but could also be RA28,or one of each as the hub seals are different diameters from side to side. The hubs are identical otherwise.
I've used the above struts to give me larger stub axles (for strength),with the aim being both a longer service life on the track, and possibly an easier time when it comes to engineering and running wider wheels.
My brake setup is custom,so the bolt-on issue there has been resolved.
The rear end is pretty straight forward,so I have no issues or questions on that front.
I have several questions regarding the front however:
1. Can anyone give me some solid data on the suspension geometry of the RA40 front end compared to the AE86's?
I've read all kinds of stuff over the years and am still as confused as when I started back in 2001.
2.Are the SAI angles the same or similar between both struts?
3.Is camber adversely affected by fitting the RA40 or RA28 strut,ala the RA60 strut-into AE86 swap?
4. Wheel size,Wheelbase, and track dimensions. Can anyone give me a link or such to a factory-loooking data sheet showing wheel fitment, wheelbase and track data for the RA40?
I'm hoping to be able to pass engineering with a 15x7" or 15x7.5" wheel.
The tiny amount of info (and nothing official unfortunately) I've been able to find on the web for the RA40 reads as follows:
Wheelbase: 2500
Front Track: 1330
Rear Track: 1350
Wheels: 14x4.5" (Offset unknown)
The AE86 from a TMCA brochure, and a Japanese book I have on hand read as:
Wheelbase: 2400
Front Track: 1355
Rear Track: 1345
Wheels: 13x5" +27 Offset
5. Was there a factory optional wheel fitted to an RA4* that measures 14x5.5" or wider?
The 3 door GTV AE86 had an optional 14x5.5" wheel, which matched the above track, and there was an optional 14x6" wheel that came with a guard moulding package that increased front and rear track to 1365 and 1360 respectively.
If I can prove factory fitment of a 14x6" wheel on both cars,I can likely argue for a 7.5" wide aftermarket wheel as the RTA will approve up to 1.5" wider than stock for the car's weight range.
Thanks in advance,
Justin...
