Pm Vito or drloz on here for one second hand.
OK guys this is all good stuff and i plan to change my AFM real soon but where is everybody getting them from, Toyota doesn't regognise any numbers i give them and a complete assy with the alloy body etc is $1100 and 6weeks away from Japan- fuck that, but i also don't want to buy a dud 2nd hand one if i could find one anyway?????
I can't seem to find Vito or drloz when i try to seend them a PM, are they shortened by any chance??
And it's back... Grrrr
Decided for some dumb reason to fill the thing up with BP Ultimate and she's "pinging like a slut" (usually run 95), No codes, no head probs showing. And worse with the A/C on. Will investigate more when I get a chance to fart in its general direction. Wondering if this is fuel related as a recent conversion has started doing the same. The reason that this thought has come to mind is that when going into winter (and yes I know these are diesels) I had a run of 3litre Surfs with leaky injector pumps and now summer the same is happening again

Why not check fuel pressure then?
Also, with older cars there're usually problems when using fuel with "cleansing effect". This kinda fuel (or fuel line cleaning fluids) washes all the crap down fuel line right into injectors.

Update.. About 10 days ago she started doing it again but worse this time as Perths weather had started to warm up into the late 30s. More so now that the A/C is in use. So combining my one doing this with a friends LS400 which had begun doing the same and being on "leave" (I said "Bugger it" and shut the shop to have a break) we had a little play using some spare coils as the problem was more pronounced with the A/C on and engine at operating temp. That is you drive to the shops, get your stuff and jump in the car to go back home and she's "Farting like you've had a feed of baked beans". What it turns out is that this isn't really a "Missfire" per-se but it's dropping 4 cyls at random, usually below 3000rpm. Now as the coils tested perfectly by all accepted test proceedures the only way to find out was to change the coils and see what happened and I'm not sure what posessed us to do this.. Possibly the consumption of some Coronas the day before and a discussion about it..
so the end result is due to the mounting position of the L/H coil (front of cyl head by A/C compressor) it is more prone to heat build up no matter in the car it was born in or whatever you've fitted it into becomming more pronounced when the ambient air temp is higher (as it cannot cool sufficiently during "Rest periods"). After new coils all round we're both back to saying to our respective Mrs's "Get in and belt up, shut up and hang on".
Of course the faulty coil is probably what took out the new dizzy cap

I'm glad you have fixed yours, it sounds very positive, mine on the other hand is still giving me the shits!! I have simply disconnected the AFM altogether and altho it runs really really rich, the miss is gone. I actually tracked down a second hand AFM but when i put it in it was exactly the same so i either bought a dud or its not the AFM. I was thinkin about your symptoms like how you say its below 3000rpm and its always the return trip from the shops? Thats exactly what mine does but if it was a heat related coil thing like yours, surely it would still breakdown without an AFM just the same. Mine is slowly getting worse so i will have to get more proactive very soon i guess... let you know how i go. I do have some 2nd hand coils so i guess its worth eliminating that shit first....
Yes well back to basics which is something a mechanic never does with his own car. My only problem ATM is Kelfords have been flattened again so no nice bits available. Might have to upset the boys at Southsides. Got a mate wound up to make a manifold as he burrowed my Celsior and his mrs gave me money rather than give my car back.. Think Eaton

I've found its normally the other coil (the one up the top) that fails first.
I've had a couple of them start breaking down over the years.

u can roughly test coils
remove cam and lead covers
start motor and with insulated pliers
gently remove the centre lead of one dizzy
this is the coil lead and as u remove it very slowly
this is like opening the spark plug gap and what this does
is puts extra load on the coil
if u can get the coil to spark across a 15 to 20mm gap then coils does seem fine
do this test of both dizzies one at a time
this isnt perfect but its good guide to atleast compare both sides to see how far u can get spark to jump
before coil cant jump no more
ive got a proffessional coil tester which pulses coil are a hi rpm and big plug gap
so it heats coils up fast to test it on max load so if u can find someone in yr area to test yr coils then maybe try that
but cheapest way is to test the gap and if u find one iffy then replace it
